Throwing the Ball
Presented by
In your throwing hand, grip the ball with the index and middle fingers and your thumb, leaving a space between the palm of your hand and the ball. With your glove at chest level, rotate your glove-hand shoulder toward the target. Bring your arm back and up over your shoulder, and throw with a snap of your wrist.
"Grip the ball the same way every time you throw it, across the wide part of the seams (the 4 seam grip)."

Skills Drills
Quick grip drill To make great throws every time, you need to use the right grip. Practice by tossing the ball a few feet in the air. As soon as the ball hits your glove take it out in the proper grip. Your grip should be the same every time: with your index and middle finger over the wide part of the seams (the four-seam grip).

Throwing mechanics and accuracy drill
Practice with a friend to work on throwing mechanics and accuracy. Add a baserunner to simulate game situations, such as a hitter running toward first.
Distance drill
Play catch with a teammate to improve your throwing ability. Vary the throwing distances.
Troubleshooting Tips
The Fundamentals If your throws are inaccurate, work on your fundamentals. Your shoulder should always point toward your target. Get a consistent grip on the ball. Practice so that the motion becomes familiar and comfortable

Use Your Whole Body If hard throws are not getting enough speed or distance, remember to use your whole body, not just your arm. Snap your wrist. |
