Pitchers: Delivery problems
mysportsguru.com
Is your pitcher struggling to
find the plate?
Here are some possible reasons why:
High with pitches
This is usually the result of the front shoulder being too high. The arm is dropping down. The arm needs to be raised higher in the delivery.
Low in dirt
Pitchers typically start missing low later in the game because of fatigue. At this point, the best solution may be to remove the pitcher from the game.
Wildness
This is usually the result of a lack of concentration. Possible problems include the failure to pick up the target, head flying, or just throwing without a purpose.
Most pitching problems occur when the pitcher tries to throw too hard. As a result, he or she loses composure and ignores the correct mechanics of delivering a pitch.
A nice smooth rhythmic windup, combined with keeping the eyes, head and the front shoulder on target will allow any pitcher to have control and be able to throw strikes. Bringing the head to the knee rather than the knee to the head will put the pitcher in the best delivery position.
Bringing the knee to the head only causes the pitcher to get in a reared back position. This causes pitches to sail high. Remember: STRIKES is the name of the pitching game. Fastballs, curve balls and change-ups are the only pitches needed to be successful. However, control of these is most important and all should be thrown for strikes.
