11 July 2002 - Billy Barr seems set to continue in his role as caretaker manager. Despite  the club saying an announcement would be made shortly, David Walker, one of the administrators running the club, has told Radio Cumbria that Billy would continue in his part-time role for the time being. Billy has told the Evening News and Star that he would take the managers post on a permanent basis if he was offered it.  Jonny Allan signs for Danish first division club Herfølge Boldklub. Steve Harkness joins his former Liverpool colleague Mark Wright at conference side Chester. Other news - Mark Hughes has announced his retirement as a player and plans to become full-time Wales manager. Pascal Cygan from French team Lille joins Arsenal. General Leopoldo Galtieri, the former leader of the Argentinian military junta at the time of the Falklands war, is arrested, accused of involvement in the abduction of 20 dissidents in 1980. Looking Backwards - 11 July 2001 Scott Dobie accepts the personal terms offered by WBA and signs the dotted line in a £150,000 deal.

12 July 2002 - Michael Knighton offers to lease the club to supporters for £200,000 a year. The offer was outlined by George Reynolds,  who said the deal was also open to would-be buyers John Courtenay and Brooks Mileson. He proposes that CCUIST should pay £100,000 immediately followed by instalments of £50,000 at Christmas and at the end of the season in May.  Neither CCUIST nor Mr Mileson could say any merit in the proposal. Billy Barr pleads with fans not to boycott. Stuart Whitehead  also expresses his worries about not getting paid  and asks the fans to get behind the team. CCUIST hold a very successful golf day at the Eden Golf Club. The event was attended by potential new owners , John Courtney and Brookes Mileson, along with  ex Carlisle players Hughie McIlmoyle, Peter McConnell, Les O'Neil, Billy Rafferty, Ron Simpson, Jim Terris and Ron Thompson. United's pre season friendly against Preston at home on the 31st of July, will now be played behind closed doors. Other news - FIFA ban Portugal's Joao Pinto from football until 17 October after the player was found guilty of punching a referee. Pinto committed the offence in Portugal's World Cup group game against South Korea after he was shown the red card for a tackle from behind. Pinto cannot play in national or club matches and has also been fined £21,700 as well as having to pay £6,500 procedural costs.

13 July 2002 - Billy Barr has the managers job for the foreseeable future as the administrators decide not to bring a new man in. The meeting for creditors to vote on the CVA proposals is provisionally marked down for 2nd August. Other news - Christian Vieri, Ronaldo and Alvaro Recoba have voluntarily agreed to take a ten per cent reduction in their wages to help cash strapped Inter Milan. Up to 26 people have been injured after a coach overturned on the M4 motorway in Berkshire. The coach, which was carrying 37 people, overturned after a collision with a Fiat Punto car, near Reading motorway services. 

15 July 2002 - John Courtenay and Brooks Mileson  are quoted in the Evening News and star, saying they "believe that Carlisle United's warnings that a fans' boycott could cause the club to fold are simply scaremongering. " Richard Prokas will again pull on a United shirt for tomorrow nights friendly against Tow Law. He and Peter Keen have been training with the club preseason and both look likely to feature in the match.  Luke Weaver has again linked up with Martin Wilkinson at Northampton and is hoping for a permanent move. Other news - Brighton & Hove Albion appoint Martin Hinshelwood as their new manager. Hinshelwood, who was formerly Brighton's director of youth football takes over from Peter Taylor, who left at the end of least season. John Walker Lindh, the American Taleban fighter, who was captured in Afghanistan, has pleaded guilty to some of the charges against him as part of a deal to avoid a possible life sentence. A 10-year-old girl from Lancaster  has died of a suspected ecstasy overdose after taking as many as five tablets of the drug.

16 July 2002 - Jeff Thorpe is in temporary charge of the youth team at Brunton Park. The ex Carlisle player, who is studying for his coaching badges, takes over from Billy Barr who vacated  the job when he took charge of the first team. Other news - Senegal's El Hadji Diouf has signed for Liverpool in a £10 million move from French club Lens. The IRA apologise to the civilian victims of its campaign of violence. In a statement in the republican newspaper An Phoblacht, it said it offered "sincere apologies" to the families of those killed on Bloody Friday.  Seven Israelis are killed and many more injured when suspected Palestinian militants attack a bus in the West Bank. The armoured bus was first hit when a bomb went off at the side of the road, then gunmen opened fire injuring people fleeing the initial blast. Over 2,000 jobs are to go at the Selby coal fields in North Yorkshire, as production is phased out.

17 July 2002The administrators  make public their plan for rescuing United. Proposals will be put to creditors at a meeting on 2nd August. The lengthy document is just too big to reproduce here but some of the key points are as follows: 

A more detailed report on the plan will appear as a separate article  at a later date. The F.A.s two year investigation by their Financial Advisory and Compliance Unit ended today with no charges being brought. In an official statement released by the club Michael Knighton blamed unnamed people and organisations in the City of Carlisle for being  involved in a massively organised conspiracy to smear his and his family’s name. He again appealed for the right people to come forward and assist the club in it's hour of need and said he was still hopeful of selling the club but not to the likes of John Courtenay or Brookes Mileson. Other news - Rio Ferdinand puts in his transfer request but Leeds turn it down.  Hewlett Packard, the US computer giant, has sacked two members of its UK staff and suspended 150 others for alleged e-mail abuse, described as the viewing and sharing of unauthorised and inappropriate material.  Up to one million council workers, members of Unison, hold a one-day strike with schools, leisure centres and libraries closed across the country.

18 July 2002 - Michael Knighton announces he is 95% there in a deal to sell to potential buyers, who he insists are genuine and honourable and honest people. The new mystery buyers are yet to be named. Carlisle play Gretna at Raydale Park and win the match 3-1 with two goals from Maddison and one from Marc Nixon. Other news - British discus record holder Perriss Wilkins has been banned for two years following a positive drugs test for anabolic steroids. Plans for a major overhaul the UK's armed forces following the 11 September terrorist attacks are unveiled. Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon revealed that the armed forces are to be given access to far better technology to help them cope with these new challenges.

19 July 2002Michael Knighton, in an interview with Paul Newton on Radio Cumbria, insists he  is 99% of the way there to selling the club, saying prospective new owners  have met with and been endorsed by Lord Clarke.  Ian Stevens, interviewed in the Cumberland News,  says he's shocked that Carlisle have released Jonny Allan and Mike Jack, saying he believes Allan could be the next 'Scott Dobie'. The Cumberland News surprise fans by running an editorial  saying it is time John Courtenay and Brookes Mileson admit defeat and clear the way for a new buyer.  Other news - Boston United, newcomers to the football league are fined  £100,000 and docked four points before the season starts. they pleaded guilty to sic charges after financial irregularities were found at the club. The club will appeal against the fine. Harold Shipman could be guilty of at least 215 murders and a  report by High Court judge Dame Janet Smith finds  the former GP could have killed as many as 260 patients.

20 July 2002 -   John courtenay  is to table a new offer to the administrators on Monday.  Carlisle look likely to miss out on ex Blackpool player Phil Clarkeson. Despite training with United Clarkson has featured in friendlies in the Southport team, scoring the only goal for them in their Tuesday night victory over Bamber Bridge. Halifax are understood to have already made him an offer and while Carlisle still are not paying all bar two of their own players its seems doubtful they will be able to up that offer.  Mike Corry announced  yesterday that he was resigning as chairman of CCUIST due to pressure of work. He will remain as a co-opted member of the board who will elect a new chair at their next meeting. Other news  -  Awful weather conditions play havoc with the third round of the Open golf and favourite Tiger Woods drops down the field. Leeds give Manchester  United until noon on Sunday to meet their valuation of Rio Ferdinand. In Formula 1 Jenson Button loses his place at Renault for 2003 in favour of Spanish rising star Fernando Alonso. Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy marries Sarah Gurling at a private ceremony in Westminster.
