JIMMY GLASS

Jimmy Glass was born in Epsom on 1st of August 1973. He was a trainee at Crystal Palace, signing for them  in 1991.  Whilst there he had loan spells at Portsmouth, Gillingham and Burnley. From  8th March 1996 he signed for Bournemouth  and played 95 league games.  On 23rd of April 1999 he signed for Swindon Town, playing 11 league games for them and it was whilst he was contracted to them that he was asked to come to Brunton Park  for the last three games of the 98/99 season.  Glass  at 6' 1" and 13lbs 4 certainly looked the part.  Carlisle had suffered a goalkeeping crisis when Tony Caig  had been sold to Blackpool on transfer deadline day.  Derby County had lent Richard Knight until the end of the season but when they went through a keeper crisis of their own they pulled him back. So Carlisle in deep relegation trouble, had three games to play to save league status when the Glass loan spell began.

The first match of the three was against Darlington, at home, a new keeper and Carlisle pressing forward at every opportunity in search of a win was a recipe for mistakes and despite Carlisle scoring 3 times, a deflection, a defensive mix up and a failed offside trap  gifted Darlington with an equal 3 goals,  The 3 -3 score line  emphasised a thrilling game but the home fans felt that it had been  points wasted.

The next match Hartlepool away, was crucial. In the first half Jimmy pulled off a fine save from ex Carlisle player Peter Beardsley . Hartlepool played out the game for a draw and the 0-0 final score meant Hartlepool were safe but Carlisle's league status now rested on a win in the final game and Scarborough getting a draw or less.

So the scene was set for the final game of the season and Jimmy's last game for Carlisle.  For a detailed look at that game go to  May 8th 1999, A Day for Heroes  The goal that Glass scored that day  saved Carlisle's league status  and captured the imagination of not just Carlisle fans but fans from all over the world.

At the end of the season  there was talk of Glass being signed to Carlisle United but negotiations broke down. Since then Jimmy has played at  Cambridge, Brentford, Oxford, Crawley Town and Kingstonian.  Currently away from football, Jimmy is working for a company selling web space on the net.
