MATTIE GLENNON

Mattie Glennon has been a fans favourite since joining the the club on loan on November 10th 2000. He made his debut in the home match against Southend, a game we won 3-1.  Mattie was born in Stockport 8/10/78. His height (6' 2") and build makes him an impressive figure in goal.  He is in his second professional season with Bolton Wanderers having come through their youth ranks. On loan until the end of the season, most fans hope he will become a permanent fixture.

Much to the dismay of the supporters Mattie Glennon was not offered a contract at the end of the season, despite expressing his wish to remain  at Carlisle United, even turning down a move to Bristol Rovers in the season because he wished to stay at Brunton Park. A high point of the season had to be his  great penalty save against York.  The low point probably the 6 -0 thrashing we received against Rochdale.  Deservedly voted player of the season 2000/01  he made 29 league appearances and appeared in three rounds of the FA Cup.  Signed to Hull for the coming season many expect Mattie to go on to bigger things.

Mattie was kind enough to answer the following questions:

When did decide to become a goalkeeper and was that the only position you wanted to play?  I became a goalkeeper because I was thrown in because I was the tallest lad there. Straight away I enjoyed it and stayed in.

When the chance came to come on loan to Carlisle United what were your feelings and what did you know about the club?  I was told on Wednesday and I came on the train on Thursday. I knew nothing of Carlisle United. my heart raced a bit when I saw the position they were in but I was very excited and confident we would turn it round, which we have done.

Do you have any goalkeeping heroes?  Peter Shilton and Peter Schmeichel. Two great goalkeepers with totally different styles and qualities but both world class.

Do you have any superstitions or pre match routines?   Yes, always the night before a game I relax in a bath, have a shave, then watch my favourite TV show  'Friends' and have a good sleep.

Are you nervous before a game?   Always, in a good excited way.

Which was your best moment/match for Carlisle United?   The Arsenal game was great but the penalty save against York in front of our fans was brilliant.

And your worst?  Rochdale was terrible and the fact the fifth goal will be played a million times !!!

How important is the crowd to you?   The Carlisle fans are the best and play a massive part for us in the games.

You have a spectacular long kick, do you have ambitions to score a goal?  I would love to score in a league game but it's a little harder than it looks.

Finally the question everyone has to ask, is it true that all goalkeepers are crazy?  Without a doubt!
