Loan spells at Tranmere, Port Vale, Darlington and Oxford followed. On the 13th of March 2000 a loan spell at St Johnstone led to a permanent contract, staying with the Saints until January 2003.
Craig signed for Carlisle on the the 17th of January and has proved to be a reliable and versatile link man, playing on the wing, in central midfield or in attack. His only goal of the campaign came away at Torquay on the 26th of April, in the 3-2 win. With the score at 0-0 and United desperately needing points, it was Craig that started the move, giving Richie Foran the ball on the right. Richie showed strength and determination to get the ball forward down the line and lay the ball across goal to where Craig was waiting. He sent the ball low, past the keeper to put United ahead.
