Midfielder
Jon was born in Middlesbrough on the 18th of August 1970. He started his football career as a junior at Hartlepool making one substitute appearance for them before being released. After a spell at Shepshed Charter he signed on a free for York on the 22nd of March 1990. He proved a popular player at Bootham Crescent, making 198 league starts and scoring 31 goals, in his five year stay. On the 1st of August 1997 he moved on to Port Vale for a fee of £45,000, then on to Birmingham for in a £150,000 deal. Jon made over 100 appearances for the blues spending nearly five years at St Andrews. After a months loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the spring of 2002 he was a free agent and took brief spells at Port Vale, Doncaster and York.
Jon signed for United on the 29th of November on a month to month contract staying until the end of the season. His debut game came against York City away, the team he had just left to join United, and was instrumental in setting up Paul Robinson to score our only goal in the 1-2 defeat. Wrexham at home in the LDV, on the 10th of December, saw Jon get on the scoresheet. On 40 minutes with no goals and Wrexham seemingly creating more of the chances Leon Osman managed to hit a shot on the turn which cannoned off the crossbar. Jon was in the right place to head the ball home. He showed the same positional skills at home to Southend on January 4th. Adam Rundle broke down the left and crossed the ball which appeared to take a deflection before Jon reacted to power the ball home. A midfielder who was happy on the wing or central, his calmness and experience were invaluable to the younger players when things were tough at the end of the season.
