The 2001/02 saw Jonny break through into the first team. One of quite a few youngsters who blossomed under the Collins/Cunningham/Elliott coaching set up at Brunton Park, showing speed and an eye for goal. His first goal for the club at senior level came at home to Rochdale on the 1st of September. Rochdale were riding high at the top of the division and Carlisle were still finding their feet as a team. For most of the game we were a poor second but an impressive debut by new boy Richie Foran and a second half where the team didn't cave in despite being 2-0 down gave supporters hope. Jonny was subbed on to replace Halliday in the 71st minute and didn't have to wait long for his chance. In the 80th minute Mark Birch's long ball found Richie Foran, who flicked the ball on and Allan's powerful shot, hit low, flew into the net. Throughout the season Jonny took some part in most games, either starting or coming on as substitute, when his speed caused problems for tiring opposition. His other goal came at home against Swansea on the 9th of March. Carlisle came into this game after a disappointing loss at Lincoln and draw at home to Southend so it was important for them to get back to winning ways. In one of the most attacking first half displays of the season Carlisle where soon on top with goals from Stevens and Whitehead in the first 20 minutes to no reply by Swansea. Jonny came off the bench to replace McGill in the 21st minute and was soon involved in the action. On 29 minutes a superb passing move between Stuart Green and Peter Murphy put Jonny through with only the keeper to beat, he calmly slotted the ball into the net. Jonny was yet another player released at the end of the season. This despite senior striker Ian Stevens voicing his surprise, saying that Jonny had the potential to turn into the clubs next 'Scott Dobie'. After trials at Danish first division side Herfølge Boldklub and Colchester Jonny is currently playing his football at Northwich Victoria in the Conference. He has already found the back of the net there, we wish him well in his future career.
