Mark was born in Bishop Auckland on the 24th of October 1980. he signed as a trainee at Middlesbrough on the 1st of August 1999. His debut in the senior side came at home at the Riverside against Liverpool on Boxing Day 2000 with a crowd of 34696. He came off the bench to replace Karembau in the 69th minute in Boro's 1-0 win. In all Mark has made 5 league and 1 cup appearance for Boro coming off the bench for each game. The 2002/03 season has seen Mark gaining experience. A 3 month loan spell at Chesterfield saw him make 15 appearances plus two sub appearances. He scored once for the Spireites in their 4-0 home win over Northampton.
Mark signed on loan at Brunton Park on the 30th of November 2002, renewing his acquaintance with ex Boro player Mark Summerbell in midfield. He scored his debut goal in his third game, the 2-2 at home to Darlo on boxing day. His last game for Carlisle came at home to Scunthorpe on the 11th of March 2003. Chesterfield immediately renewed their interest in him and he signed for the Spirites on a free on the 21st of March, playing a further 8 games in the 02/03 season for them, scoring twice.
