Paul was born in Sunderland on the 20th of November 1978. He signed as a trainee for Darlington on the 1st of August 1994 and made 8 league starts plus a further 19 sub appearances for the Quakers, scoring 3 goals. In March 1998 Newcastle paid £25,000 to take him to St James Park Paul broke into the senior team in the 99/00 season, he scored once for the Magpies. In the EUFA cup at home against CSKA Sofia. Paul came on in the 71st minute replacing Silvio Maric and hit the back of the net in the 88th minute, Newcastle won the tie 4-2 on aggregate. On the 24th of July 2000 he was transferred to Wimbledon, signing for the Dons for £150,000. Opportunities in the first team have been limited but Paul has been gaining valuable experience with loan spells at Burnley, Dundee United, and Grimsby.
Paul signed on a 3 month loan at Carlisle on the 22nd of November, scoring his first goal for away at York on the 30th of November, his second game for the club. United were a goal down when in the 73rd minute McCarthy send a ball forward to Paul whose low shot wriggled under the keeper. The match ended in a 2-1 defeat. His next goal came in the LDV match against Wrexham on the 10th of December. United were 1-0 ahead by the 88th minute when the result was sealed. Foran broke down the right and squared the ball to Paul whose awareness had put him in the ideal position to tap the ball home.
Paul left the club at the end of his 3 month spell, at the end of February.
