Phil was born on the 20th of October 1980 in Warrington and signed as a trainee for Reading on the 1st of August 1988.  Failing to break into the Reading first team  except for an appearance in the League cup game against Barnsley on the 23rd of September 98, a 1-1 draw, he went to Rochdale on a free on the 7th of August 2000.   He started 12 games at Rochdale and made a further 20 sub appearances often coming on as an attacking option at the expense of the Peter Pan of football Tony Ford.  Phil scored twice for Rochdale, his first in the 1-1 draw at home against Cardiff, the other in the 3-1 home win against Leyton Orient.  Thankfully he didn't score at Spotland  on the10th of April when Carlisle suffered the humiliating 6-0 defeat but he did come on for Ford that night in the 74th minute.

At the end of the 00/01 season Phil moved on, signing for Leyton Orient on a free on the 3rd of July. He has made 3 substitute appearances at the 'O's this season, the first in the League Cup against Crystal Palace which ended in a 2-4 loss. This followed by appearances in the wins away at York and Darlington, the latter on the 18th of September, his final game for  them.

Phil played four games in his months loan. He looked a competent player on the wing and many were sorry to see him go. He scored in the 3-0 home win against Scunthorpe on December the 1st.
