Steve originally signed for Carlisle as a trainee on the 1st of October 1999. He made two substitute appearances in the 99/00 season for the first team. He came on in the 87th minute at Barnett away on the 23rd of November 99, replacing Paul Baker. In the following match, Rotherham at home on the 27th of November he again replaced Paul Baker, this time in the 65th minute. He collected a yellow card in an otherwise competent display.
The following season Skinner was unable to break into the first team and left the club on the 13th of October 2000 to join Queen of the South. He then signed for Gretna on the 1st of August 2001 and was brought back to Brunton Park on a months loan on the 5th of October, and is now back at Gretna.
