Stuart was born in London on the 27th of August 1977, he signed as a trainee to Newcastle on the 28th of August 1995. He didn't break into the first team and had loan spells at Hull, Swindon, Gillingham, Hartlepool, Wrexham, Bournemouth and Stockport before signing on a free to Darlington on the 18th of August 2000, making 27 appearances for the Quakers. Stuart never managed a league goal for them but strangely wasn't at all goal shy when it came to the cups. He scored a penalty in the tie against Notts Forest in the league Cup match on the 22nd of August 2000 and then went on to score the winning goal in the replay. He also scored in the next round against Bradford, where a 0-0 draw had led to another replay which Bradford won 7-2. His only other goal came against York in the LDV trophy which Darlo won 4-0. Stuart moved on to Plymouth on the 8th of March 2001, playing 11 games plus one substitute appearance for them.
On the 17th of August Stuart signed on a free to Carlisle, a short term deal. He played 6 league games, all in midfield, collecting two yellow cards. He also played in the League Cup game against Stockport.
Elliot was not resigned at the end of his deal and he moved on, first to Durham City from the 29th of September, then signing for Scarborough on the 1st of October 2001.
