Will was born in Workington on the 1st of October 1976. He signed as a trainee for Carlisle on the 1st of August 1995.
He made his debut in the first game of the 96/97 season on the17th of August, a 1-0 away win for Carlisle. He made a steady start, despite picking up a yellow card in the Fulham away match on the 31st of August, a 1-0 defeat and again in the next game, against Chester away on the 3rd of September, which Carlisle won 3-1. The only other booking for the rest of the season was another yellow, away at Hartlepool on the 10th of September, a 2-1 win for the blues. His performance in that match won him his first Carlisle Man of the Match Award. Injury kept him out of the team through October and November, a total of 14 matches missed. He didn't play again until the 21st of December, a thrilling 3-2 home win against Scunthorpe where he came on as a substitute. From then on Varty was an ever present in the starting line up until the end of the season, helping to win promotion back to division 2. A good debut year in a good team. Highlight of the year that season was Carlisle United's second trip to Wembley and this time, winning the Auto Windscreen Shield. To read Will Varty's thoughts on that day, click Here .

The next season, 97/98 Varty was ever present in the starting line up until the home game against Bristol City a 3-0 defeat on the 29th of November. He also missed the next against Oldham but was back for the impressive 2-0 home win over Fulham on the 13th of December. A run of consistent performances followed. In the home match against Walsall on the 14th of February United gained a 1-1 draw thanks to Varty's last minute winner. things were going badly for the team and relegation began to look a certainty. For the first time in the season Will started from the subs bench at home against Bournemouth on March 28th a 1-0 defeat but was back in the starting line up for the next against Bristol City, away on the 4th of April, yet another 1-0 defeat. He played the final five games to the end of the season. Relegated back to the third division, it was a disappointing year for Varty and for Carlisle, so many off field problems seemed to drag the team down despite the presence of such future stars as Jansen, Boertein and Delap in the side.

Varty played in the next two matches, then was dropped and went on a loan spell to Northampton from the 1st to the 11th of December. He was straight back in the team on the 12th, playing a full match in the 2-1 home win against Hartlepool. His last game for United was away at Plymouth on the 19th of December, United lost the game 2-0 and Varty was taken off in the second half.
