SCOTT  DOBIE

It was a long hard season for United, when did you realise we were in a relegation fight?  When I returned from a loan spell (to Scottish First division team Clydebank) we were second bottom. I realised how serious it was getting.

In the week before the match, how did you feel?  Everyone seemed surprisingly relaxed. I think Nigel Pearson (manager) made everyone a bit more relaxed too.

On the morning of the match, did you feel more nervous than usual?  To be honest it didn't really sink in how important this game was until I sat and thought about it, so on the morning of the game I didn't feel nervous.

Even before the game started the crowd was larger and more vocal than previous games. Did that effect you?   The crowd definitely played a big part in that day. They were very vocal and behind us from start to finish.

We had to rely on Peterborough getting a result at Scarborough. Did you hear that they had scored an early goal while you were on the pitch?  No.

After 25 minutes you head the ball into the net, only for it to be disallowed, did you feel it was a good goal?  I thought there was nothing wrong with the goal myself? After that I thought our luck wasn't going to be in!

At half time were you optimistic?  At half time I was pretty nervous and spent most of it walking around the shower area.

When Phillips scored for Plymouth, what were your feelings?  I couldn't believe it.  He'd travelled 20 - 25 yards as everyone backed off him and he scored, Gutted!

At the end of normal time, Colin Carter could be heard on the tannoy, announcing the Scarborough final score and lifting the crowd to fever pitch. Did you hear the Scarborough score?  No, I didn't know what had gone on until a fan who had run onto the pitch told me.

Did you know how close we were to time when Anthony went to take that last corner? Yes, I knew this was it! If we didn't score we were playing conference football next season. We had to score.

Anthony put the ball in and you rose and headed goal wards, only for the keeper to parry, did you think that was "game over"?  When I headed it I caught it really well. I thought I might have scored, only to see the keeper parry it. After that it happened very quickly and I just remember thinking "Who's that in the red top scoring"?!!

When did you first realise Jimmy was there?  He came up late, so no one had seen him, I just remember seeing his red keeper top.

After Jimmy scored, the whole ground erupted, did you fear the match would be stopped? I didn't think it would be stopped because that was time, "Game Over".

What were your feelings when the final whistle went?  I felt ECSTATIC but pretty scared with eight thousand fans running onto the pitch, so I got inside as quick as I could. It wasn't until two or three weeks later it sank in. Just how close and lucky we were on May 8th 1999.
