Stalking Carp on the Float By Nigel Griffin One of my favorite methods of taking Carp is on the float. The type of floats that I use are the eurostyle wagglers or pencil bobbers as they are known here in the states. These I fish as a slider, the advantage of the sliding float is that the depth can be changed instantly if needed. To rig the waggler float as a slider first a tie a stop knot or place a bobber stop on the main line. Next thread the float though its eyelet at the bottom, the eyelet should stop once it hits the knot or stop. Now tie on a leader of a lighter breaking strain than your main line below the float ,this will break if you get hung up or the fish smashes you up, saving your float !! Enough split shot should be placed just above the leader to sink the float so that only the tip is showing. Great baits for float fishing include sweet corn or plain white bread fished directly on the hook. A sharp high quality hook such as the Kamasan B982 in size 4 or 6 should be used. This bait should be set so that it sits just on the lake or river bed. All that is needed now are some Carp in the shallows. Start by looking near weed or reed beds , you may see the dark shadows of fish cruising under the surface or you might see silt clouds in the water indicating a fish. Better yet look for bubbles moving along signaling a feeding fish , rooting around on the bottom. If you have a good aim, fire some sweet corn just ahead of the fish with your bait sling shot. Now make your cast . This again has to be just ahead of the fish , then drawn back into its anticipated path. For accurate casting it is best to use as light a line as you can get away with. A fast action rod is a big plus for putting the float in the right spot ! Now your heart is in your mouth as the bubbles approach the float, the float moves off & you strike , all hell breaks loose as the big wake of a bolting fish parts the water. Exciting stuff that keeps me coming back for more !!!
