Brian in the Spotlight at OCS Media Day

Rougemont, NC. After two years sitting idle, Orange County Speedway (OCS) hosted a number of local media representatives and race teams to promote the track's reopening in the near future. Brian and the team would like to thank Vance Agee, Melvin Stanley, and the entire OCS staff for inviting us to participate at the track and for all of their effort in bringing OCS back to life. Upon hitting the asphalt, Brian picked up where we he left off at the end of 2003, leading the pack of Limited Sportsman cars during the afternoon practice sessions.

Brian was featured in a number of news stories about the track's reopening. Brian's interview with WTVD ABC11's Don Ross and taking the camera operator around the track in the #10 were featured during the morning news on the Raleigh/Durham channel. The News & Observer also included Brian in its coverage of the return of OCS.

Strong Finish to the 2005 Season at South Boston Speedway

Qualifying Time: 16.437
Start: 3rd
Finish: 5th

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. After weeks of frustration, bad luck, and a struggling race car, Brian and the team closed the 2005 season at South Boston riding a strong wave of momentum. We would like to thank H.C. Sellers and the entire Sellers race team for assisting us during this final race and throughout the season.

Practice: During the open test session on Thursday night, we were happy with the handling characteristics of the car and made only slight adjustments before returning on Saturday. However, the car would become much looser when Brian hit the track Saturday morning. The day got off to a rough start as Brian made slight contact with the inside wall after spinning early in the first practice session. The car only sustained minor body damage, allowing Brian to return to the track for the remainder of the session. We made few gains on the car’s handling during the two practice sessions, convincing us to make a number of changes before the qualifying session.

Qualifying: The longer 200-lap event that was on schedule for the Limited Sportsman Division required all teams to qualify on four sticker tires for the first time since the season opener. Anticipating the change to the car with the four new tires, along with the loose handling in practice, we decided to tighten the car with a number of adjustments. These adjustments proved to be effective as Brian turned a fast lap of 16.427 seconds, placing him 3rd in the 21-car field.

200-Lap Feature: At the start of the race, we were focused on maintaining a consistent line and lap time in order to be a contender at the end. The opening laps were action-filled, as a number of cars were involved in accidents. After a number of green flag laps, Brian began to receive pressure from Tommy Peregoy (2) for the third position. In an effort to save the car for the final laps, Brian allowed Peregoy to take the position and settled into fourth. The top four cars remained in the same order until Bruce Anderson (9) was forced to pit with a bad ignition coil. At the halfway break, Brian remained in third behind leaders Justin Snow (7) and Peregoy.

The top six cars were inverted for the start of the second half of the race. Steve Collins (28), Billy Myers (05), Jonathan Bailey (89), Brian, Peregoy, and Snow led the field to the restart. Justin Snow was the only car able to make a charge in the early laps, making his way to the fourth position. Nearly 30 laps in, Brian once again felt pressure from Peregoy for position. However, before any attempt at a pass was made, Brian was sent spinning between turns 3 and 4 after contact from the 2 car. Fortunately, little damage was done to the car, but the track position lost was significant. Peregoy was eventually penalized a lap, and Brian would work his way to the 5th position before the checkered flag fell. Despite the spin, this effort was one of the strongest of the season for the entire team.

Final Results
1. Justin Snow (7)
2. Billy Myers (05)
3. Jonathan Bailey (89)
4. Steve Collins (28)
5. Brian Cole (10)

Brian Brings Home a 2nd Place Finish

Qualifying Time: 16.549
Start: 5th
Finish: 2nd

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. A wild night in the Limited Sportsman Division turned out to be the night for Brian to get his best career finish at South Boston Speedway. Brian's qualifying time placed us in the 5th starting position. After a series of early cautions, we were elevated to the 3rd position with 47 laps remaining. Brian would battle Timmy Langford (55) for a majority of the race for the second position, taking over the spot with just under 20 laps remaining. A late caution gave us a shot at leader Charles Barnes (64), however Barnes was able to maintain the lead to pick up his first win in a number of seasons.

Brian Returns to the Track with a 6th Place Finish

Qualifying Time: 16.595
Start: 3rd
Finish: 6th

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. Following weeks of work to repair the car, help from Sellers Racing, Inc., and a beneficial test session on Thursday, July 28, Brian returned to racing action Saturday night with the N-Touch Wireless/Furniture Mart of Roxboro Chevy. The team spent the entire day on Thursday testing the car for the first time with the new front clip with assistance from Late Model driver Peyton Sellers. Our lap times were fast immediately, and we were able to make a few improvements on the car’s handling.

Track conditions seemed to be different when we returned on Saturday, as we fought a tight condition in both practice sessions. Despite the tight condition, Brian turned a fast qualifying lap of 15.593 seconds, a lap good enough for the 3rd starting position. This was a season best, and we hoped to maintain a top 3 position for the entire 50-lap race.

Beginning at the drop of the green flag, Brian would have to fight a severe push for all 50 laps of the Limited race. Brian managed a 6th place finish by the end of the event, allowing us to focus on making a number of improvements this week as we continue to learn about the new style front clip. The next step will be attending the open practice at South Boston Speedway this Thursday, August 4. The next scheduled race for the Limited Sportsman Division is Saturday, August 13.

Next Race Scheduled for July 30

ROXBORO, NC. The rebuilding of the N-Touch Wireless/Furniture Mart Monte Carlo is nearly complete. After making contact with the wall at South Boston on June 18, we determined that the front clip on the car was bent beyond repair. The next step was to decide between repairing this chassis and getting our backup chassis ready for the remainder of the season. Being that the backup was a different style chassis, the decision was made that it would be less expensive to repair the primary car, allowing us to use a majority of the same parts on the car.

When we return to the track, Brian's #10 will be utilizing the new drop snout front clip like those that are now on a majority of the Limited Sportsman cars. In addition to the new clip and all new suspension components, the front bumper was replaced with the 2003 Monte Carlo style. While we were able to be competitive with the car in the past, all of the improvements that have been made to the car should allow Brian to become a threat to win for the remainder of the season at South Boston. We look forward to returning to the track with much more competitive equipment than the nearly decade old clip that we have been working with.

A test session will be scheduled for the week of July 25 at South Boston Speedway. At that time we hope to find a combination that will work with the new clip and return with a strong run in the July 30 race.

Inside Wall at South Boston Speedway Claims Another Car

Qualifying Time: 16.570
Start: 7th
Finish: 13th

ROXBORO, NC. The infamous inside retaining wall at South Boston Speedway claimed yet another victim Saturday night, this time being the #10 N-Touch Wireless/Furniture Mart car. Our night ended before completing a half lap after starting in the 7th position. Brian was maintaining his position on the bottom groove of the track when Timmy Langford (55) began coming down the banking out of the second corner, making contact with the right side of Brian’s car. Langford continued coming down until the two cars locked together, resulting in Brian being pinned between Langford and the inside wall. The positioning of the wall ten feet onto the banking of the track caused a substantial amount of damage, altering our schedule for the coming weeks.

A majority of the front suspension components, as well as the front clip were heavily damaged in the wreck. We will now compare the costs and benefits of repairing this chassis with those associated with preparing our other chassis for competition. The team will not be able to prepare a car for the next race on June 25, and we had already planned to miss the scheduled races on July 9 and July 16. The next scheduled race for the team will depend on the finances available and the time necessary to prepare either of these cars to return to the track. Stay tuned to the website for car and scheduling updates.

Brian Survives, Brings Home a 6th Place Finish

Qualifying Time: 16.610
Start: 6th
Finish: 6th

ROXBORO, NC. Brian and the team took advantage of open practice day on Thursday at South Boston Speedway before rain would end the session early. We were able to make one run on the track, making minor adjustments in which the car seemed to respond well. Based on this information, we returned to the track on Saturday with a similar setup. A different set of tires and a clean race track tightened the car dramatically during the mid-afternoon practice sessions. Despite adjustments, the car remained too tight in qualifying, resulting in a 6th place starting position.

We made a number of changes to the car before the race in an effort to free the car through the center of the corner. The changes did result in making the car much looser entering the corners, however the car remained tight through the center. Early in the race, Brian was able to dive under Tommy Peregoy (2) to battle for the 5th position. The two battled door-to-door for several laps. The loose condition entering the corner finally proved to be too severe to gain the position, causing Brian to turn sideways while under Peregoy. Fortunately, Brian was able to steer clear of Peregoy, but Kenny Bowes (80) was also able to gain a position while Brian corrected the car.

A second close call came just a few laps later when Charles Barnes (64) spun out of turn four while being challenged on the outside by Bruce Anderson (9). As Barnes slid up the track, Peregoy, Bowes, and Brian all narrowly missed his car while having to squeeze past on the top groove. All the competitors were able to come out unscathed, with Justin Snow (7) continuing to lead as he had done the entire race. Brian maintained the 6th position for the rest of the race, crossing the finish line just behind the cars of Jonathan Bailey (89), Peregoy, and Bowes.

Despite Struggles, 3 Consecutive Top 5’s

Qualifying Time: 16.594
Start: 9th
Finish: 4th

ROXBORO, NC. The key this past Saturday night: avoid the “big one”. Fortunately, Brian was able to avoid the wreck that involved six cars. The problems began after contact was made between the battling cars of Justin Snow (7) and Jonathan Bailey (89) sent Bailey into the outside wall in turn three. Also involved in the incident were Bruce Anderson (9), Tommy Peregoy (2), Brian Pembleton (00), Andrew Perry (33), and Danny Willis, Jr. (23). Peregoy and Willis were the only two cars able to complete the 50-lap event.

The N-Touch Wireless/Furniture Mart of Roxboro entry was fair throughout both practice sessions and posted a top five lap time during the second session. In qualifying, the car was both stable and smooth, however Brian’s time was only good enough for the 9th starting position. We determined that a gear change during the week was the main cause for the disappointing qualifying attempt and we elected to change the gear again before the race. The penalty for such a change was to start the race at the rear of the field. The team’s decision to forfeit the 9th place starting position was key in dodging the multi-car wreck that red-flagged the field for a lengthy period.

Once racing action resumed, Brian inherited the 3rd position, trailing leader Snow and Charles Barnes (64). A slow restart by Barnes sent Brian to the outside groove in turns one and two, allowing Jason Dickerson (11) to battle us for the 3rd position. Brian held off this challenge and maintained the position for several laps. Tommy Peregoy would soon begin to pressure Brian just before making contact with our left-rear quarter panel heading into turn one. A lap later, Peregoy was able to cleanly pass Brian. As the car began to get looser during the long green-flag run, Brian also had to hold off a last-lap challenge from Dickerson for the 4th position, bringing home the team’s third consecutive top five finish.

The team plans to test during the week to prior to our next event, June 11, in hopes of finding a setup suitable for the warmer weather conditions that we'll be racing in for the months ahead. We will also be testing a new engine from Xtreme Racing Engines by Kevin Bowen. The combination of a new engine and some key setup changes should improve our results in the coming weeks.

Brian Captures 2 Top Fives Early in the 2005 Season

Qualifying Time: 16.553
Start: 8th
Finish: 4th

ROXBORO, NC. Improvements made during the off-season are already paying off for Brian Cole early in the 2005 season at South Boston Speedway. Assistance with the chassis setup and steering geometry from Sellers Racing, Inc. has provided the team with a car that is now very responsive to adjustments and is now competitive with the newer model chassis running at South Boston.

In the May 28 event, Brian scored a season best finish of 4th in only the team’s fourth race of the season, his second consecutive top five finish. After fighting a loose car throughout both practice sessions, we struggled in our qualifying attempt. Brian turned in a lap good enough for an 8th place starting position just behind Tommy Peregoy (2). He quickly found his way to the bottom groove on the track and started gaining positions throughout the race. After taking the 5th position from Brian Pembleton (00) midway through the race, Brian was running lap times within one tenth of a second of eventual race-winner Jonathan Bailey (89). Late-race engine troubles for pole-sitter Bruce Anderson (9) allowed us to move ahead to the 4th position in the closing laps.

The N-Touch Wireless/Furniture Mart of Roxboro entry will hit the track again this Thursday, June 2 during an open practice session at South Boston Speedway. This open practice will give us a chance to fine tune the chassis and select the correct gear ratio for the track with the much warmer conditions. On Saturday, Brian will be chasing his first podium finish of the season and his first career Limited Sportsman victory.
