My Favorite & Least Favorite Equine Products

Have you ever bought some equine product that says it works wonders? So you buy it, try it, and find out...it lied.
What about the equine product that you're not so sure about, but it actually turns out the product really works wonders? This page will tell you just that: Which equine products work, and which are just a waste of money. Of course, keep in mind that these are all my opinions, and I have only tested them solely on my horse. Every horse is different, so all horses will react differently with these products.

The Good List

Shapley's M-T-G
This is great stuff! It's a main-tail-groom (hence, the "M-T-G") conditioner. I put it in my horse's tail twice a week and put the tail in a tailbag. My horse's tail has grown a lot since I've started using it! It's also a fungicide. My horse had a bad ear fungus (the kind that almost impossible to clear up), so about 3 times a week, I put the M-T-G on the affected area, and after using it for about 2 months it's gone! He also had mud fever on his back legs. I put some M-T-G on it and the mud fever disappeared in just a few days!!!

SMB II boots
Sports Medicine Boots are a great way to protect your horse's legs when riding. SMB's absorb 20% of the shock your horse's legs take in while working him. They can be used for the front or the back legs. They are also easy to clean and come in many fun colors. They are, however, a bit pricy, but last long and are well worth the price.

Cowboy Magic Detangler & Shine
This conditioner gets every knot out! I use it right before I enter a class, especially showmanship, at a horse show. However, over-usage can cause damage to the mane and tail because one of the ingredients is acetone. Acetone is the same ingredient that's used in people's nail polish remover and will dry and break the hair. So I recommend this product only for horse shows, and I usually wash my horse's tail out after I'm done showing.

Ultra Hoof Polish Remover Spray
Spray it on polished hooves and watch the polish literally run right off the hoof! My farrier recommended, and I'm glad he did! Just beware of the fumes.

Pepi Coat Conditioner
I thought my naturally shiny horse was shiny enough. Then, I tried this stuff. It really enhanced his red bay color and his shine! I don't show without it. Just spray it on after you bathe and sweatscrape your horse and then let your horse dry.

EQyss Premier Color Intensifying Shampoo
This shampoo really gets my horse clean and shiney! It smells very pretty too. It does putty up though if you keep it in the barn during the winter due to the cold weather. It is a little pricy too.

Quic Braid
It's hair spray for horses! (and humans too because I tried it once... but I wouldn't recommend it for people unless it's a hair emergency!) Quic Braid is a sticky spray that really helps with braiding, especially if your horse has a slippery mane.

Pyranha Fly Spray
Most everyone at my barn uses this stuff. It's the best fly spray I've ever used. It comes in an aerosal can too that I use for shows because it makes my horse shinier. Sadly, Pyranha is said, so I've heard, to be bad for the ozone.

EQyss Marigold Fly Spray
It's a natural botanical, it's pesticide free and it smells soo pretty! This is my second favorite fly spray. It won't burn your horse's eyes, and you can use it on his face. Sadly, it runs around $14.50 per 32oz bottle and goes pretty fast.

Equicare Flysect Super-7 Fly Spray
Another good fly spray, smells like people's fly spray and works pretty darn good, a bit pricy though.

Healthy Hair Care Silverado Face Glo
I use this stuff for horse shows. It gives a natural shine, lasts a long time, and it has sunscreen built in. It smells fruity too!

Lik-It Treats
My horse and I... I mean my horse, likes these treats. They come in many flavors like apple, pepperment, carrot, garlic, etc. They seriously taste like candy, yet they're nutritious. Be very careful how you hang these $4 treats or else your horse will eat it up within two hours! (I've experienced this with my horse. He constantly tries to find ways to corner the treat against a wall so he can bite and eat it!) It's best to hang them from the ceiling in the middle of your horse's stall. A great boredom reducer!

The Bad List

Wahl Pocket Pro Compact Trimmer
I bought one of these and owned it for a few days. I returned it because it was very loud and very weak. I mean, I know they're only meant for small areas, but come on! Don't waste your money! Go to a drug store and get people electric hair clippers for $10! They work better than some of the expensive clippers for horses you'll find out there!

Bronco Fly Spray
No wonder it's $5. I does nothing at all! Spend that $5 on a Lik-it treat!

Ultra Clear Hoof Polish
This hoof polish is the worst! It takes quite a while to dry. After a few minutes of walking my horse, it made his hooves look all cracked because the polish cracked on his hoof.
