Freight win Virginia Tournament title

Vandalia's men's fastpitch softball team won its second straight tournament title after sweeping the round robin competition at the Virginia Tournament over the weekend.

Guaranteed Air Freight extended its winning streak to 12 games by winning four contests in the tournament.

The Freight started the tournament by beating Mississippi Valley of Mendon, 16-8.

Vandalia scored in all six innings in which they batted, posting three or more runs in four straight frames.

Rich Well led the 19-hit attack, finishing five for five, with two home runs and six RBIs. Bob Nagel was four for four, with two doubles, a homer and two RBIs. Mark Burnam and Mike Simmons each homered and drove in two runs.

The Freight won a close game to improve to 2-0 in the tournament. They beat Rudd's Trophies of Peoria, 3-0.

Jose Deloren pitched a three-hitter for Vandalia, striking out eight and walking one.

The Freight took the lead in the fourth, when Well doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice by Burnam. Well scored on a suicide squeeze by Kurt Hickenbottom. Hickenbottom added an RBI single during the Freight's two-run rally in the sixth inning.

The Freight won in another three-hit shutout, beating West Central Fastpitch, 7-0.

Payton Cloe started and allowed only three hits in five innings for the victory. He struck out five and walked two.

Greg Bellaver struck out five of the six batters he faced to finish the game.

Bellaver, J.D. Arnold and Brian Buscher were all three for three in the victory. Arnold and Buscher each drove in one run. Kevin Cook tripled and drove in two runs. Nick Casey had two hits and an RBI.

The Freight ended their perfect weekend by winning a shootout against the Bowen Merchants, 25-19.

Eight of Bowen's runs were unearned, as the Freight committed seven errors.

On offense, the Freight tallied 20 hits, and took advantage of 11 walks and four errors.

Nagel was five for six, with two homers, a double and six RBIs. Simmons finished four for four, with a double and two RBIs. Hickenbottom was three for five, with a double and five RBIs. Burnam had two hits, including a triple, and drove in one run. Bellaver had a hit and two RBIs. Well had two hits, including a homer, and two RBIs. Casey doubled twice.

The Freight (15-4) will prepare for the Altamont Fourth of July Tournament by hosting Teutopolis KCs this Wednesday. (*this was cancelled)
