Vandalia's
men's fastpitch softball team began its defense of the Altamont Fourth of July
Tournament title with two wins.
Guaranteed Air Freight beat Koerner's Miller Lite of
Teutopolis on Saturday, 9-2, then topped Nokomis on Sunday, 3-0, to join three
other teams with a 2-0 record.
The Freight erased a 1-0 deficit in Saturday's opening
round game by scoring seven times in the fourth inning against Koerner's.
The Freight loaded the bases, tying the game when Marty
Cloe scored on a wild pitch.

Vandalia's next two runs also scored
on wild pitches. An RBI single by Mike Simmons and three-run homer by Bob Nagel
gave the Freight a 7-1 lead.
That was more than enough for Cloe, who struck out 16
in the complete-game win.
On Sunday, Alan Meinhart threw a four-hit shutout
against Nokomis.
Rich Well gave the Freight a 2-0 lead with a two-run
homer in the top of the first inning. The Freight added another run in the
second inning, then zeroes dominated.
The Freight meet the Belleville Stallions at 9 p.m.
Friday. The double-elimination tournament concludes Saturday.
