In an extraordinary game with the unlikeliest of heroes, San Jose outlasted host Chabot 95-93 in double overtime to claim the championship of the Chabot College Classic. SF Jamal Hill, who was named Tourney MVP, led all scorers with 28 pts. PF Nicolai Iversen had 15 pts and a game-high 20 rebs plus 6 asts. SG Mike McFadden scored 21 despite foul trouble and also added 9 rebs. But the winning shot was scored by reserve F Donnie Davis on a 10-foot jumper with 11 seconds left in the second overtime.
Each team had managed a big buzzer-beating play to keep the game going. At the end of regulation, SJCC’s Jeff Jones blocked a shot at the basket with 5 seconds left to keep the score 81-81. And at the end of the 1st overtime, Chabot’s Anthony Shavies hit a turnaround 3 with 1 second left to tie the game at 88.
In the game’s key sequence, San Jose had the ball with the score tied at 93 and called timeout. When play resumed, the ball went to Hill, who tried a 12-foot runner that hit the rim. Iversen grabbed the rebound and passed to Davis, who nailed the winning shot. Davis was in the game only after McFadden and Jones had fouled out, and this was his only shot attempt of the night.
Chabot had 4 seconds to try to tie or win the game, but when the ball went to SG E.J. Costello, a Jaguar double-team converged on him, preventing a shot attempt. As he tried to pass, the buzzer sounded.
Shavies had a standout game for the Gladiators including his clutch 3-pointer. He finished with 22 pts, 10 rebs and 4 steals off the bench. Costello tied for team honors with 22 pts, which included 5 threes. PG Kameron Gray scored 18 of his 21 pts after halftime and added 7 rebs and 6 assists.
