Keith West had a huge game for Ventura as the Pirates topped regional rival Moorpark, 77-59, Saturday to complete a Ventura College doubleheader sweep. West finished with 23 pts, 10 rebs and 8 asts on the night as Ventura moved to 25-3 overall and 8-0 in the WSC North conference.
As expected, Moorpark surrounded Pirate Center Jonathan Oliver, forcing someone else on Ventura to beat them. The Raiders’ sagging zone held Oliver to just 8 pts, though he did grab 10 rebs. However, it also allowed West to have his big night. And starting SG Drew Lowery tossed in 15 pts as well. Forward Robert Love added 10 pts off the bench.
But the star of the night was West. He started at SF but played most of the 2nd half at PG in place of Rashien Little (who sat out the game). West scored 15 of his 23 pts in the 2nd half, and committed just 2 turnovers. The Pirates had just 10 turnovers on the night, 3 of which came in the final minute, long after the outcome had been decided.
Moorpark was led by PF Dallas Townsend, who had 22 pts and 6 rebs. SG Maike Hernandez had a strong game off the bench with 12 pts and 4 asts.
Moorpark was able to stay close early and trailed by just 5 at halftime. The Raiders shot 56% from the field in the 1st half with a lot of baskets coming on layups as they repeatedly beat the Pirates down the floor. But the second half was a different story entirely, and Ventura had already built a comfortable 14-pt lead when Oliver got his 4th foul with over 12 minutes remaining. And even with Oliver out of the game Moorpark couldn’t chip into the Pirate lead.
