Antelope Valley got big performances from PF Brandun Mates and SF Sidney Melvin and a strong 2nd half from C Damien Seals to outlast the Desert Roadrunners, 73-66. Mates finished with a game-high 27 pts and added 9 rebs and 4 asts. Melvin scored 17 of his 26 pts in the 1st half and grabbed 8 rebs. Seals had a game-best 10 rebs including 8 after halftime. Desert stayed close and trailed by just 4 in the final minute before Mates, Melvin and Seals combined to hit 5 of 6 FTs to seal the win.
C Mario Davis had a remarkable game for the Roadrunners, scoring 26 pts on 10 of 10 from the floor. However, he was also plagued by foul trouble and played only about half the game. He scored COD's 1st 4 pts of the night but committed his 2nd foul soon after and sat out the final 14 mins or so of the 1st half. In the 2nd half, he scored on a driving layup that gave COD a 47-44 lead but was whistled for the charge which meant he had to sit with his 4th foul midway through the 2nd half. By the time he returned, AVC led 56-51 with about 6 mins left. Davis fouled out in the final minute when COD trailed 68-64 and had no choice but to foul.
SG Chris Acker tossed in 13 pts including 11 in the 2nd half to help the Roadrunner cause. However, the starting guards for COD combined for just 5 of 26 from the floor.
