After letting an early 21-point lead slip away, Moorpark finished strong to edge Bakersfield Monday night at Moorpark. PG Anish Sharda scored the Raiders' final 5 pts to overcome a 59-58 deficit with under 2 minutes left and lead Moorpark to a 63-60 win.
Moorpark got off to an extraordinary start, taking a 24-3 lead in the first 7 minutes. SG Reny Maynard scored 16 of Moorpark's first 20 points as he hit on his first 5 shots from the field and added 3 free throws. But Bakersfield closed the gap to 10 late in the first half though they still trailed by 11 at the break. Moorpark still led by 11 at 49-38 midway through the 2nd half, but 3 threes by PG Cody Victor brought the Renegades to within striking distance. Then Bakersfield took its first lead of the game at 51-49 with 5:15 left.
The game see-sawed back and forth into the final 2 minutes. Bakersfield last led at 59-58 but a Sharda three gave the Raiders a 61-59 lead. A FT by C Bryson Gholston closed the gap to 61-60 but another jumper by Sharda made it a 3-point game at 63-60. On the next possession, Bakersfield got the ball inside to Gholston, but his shot was blocked by Raiders' C Justin Saad with 16 secs to go. After a timeout, Moorpark PF Dallas Townsend was fouled and had a chance to make it a 2-possession lead, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 to give Bakersfield one last chance to tie. However SG Garrett Brown's 3-pointer in the final seconds bounced off the rim.
Sharda and Maynard led Moorpark with 18 pts each, and Saad had a team-best 10 rebs. SF Mike Atkinson grabbed 7 boards and dished out 8 asts without committing a turnover. Overall, Moorpark had just 9 turnovers compared to 19 by Bakersfield. The Renegades were led by Victor, who tossed in 17 of his game-high 19 pts in the 2nd half, and added 5 asts without committing a turnover. F Torrey Harper came off the bench and grabbed 11 rebs. Moorpark moves to 10-8 on the season while Bakersfield falls to 10-10.
