Oxnard 85, Moorpark 73

Moorpark won the battle, but lost the war, as they held Jeremiah Massey to just 12 pts but fell at Oxnard, 85-73. Five Condors scored at least 12 pts each to offset superb efforts from Moorpark's Dallas Townsend and Justin Saad. The Raiders' starting backcourt shot a combined 0-14, which didn't help Moorpark's cause much either.

Moorpark used their usual tight zone, double-teaming Massey when he didn't have the ball and triple-teaming him whenever he got it in the post. The strategy limited him to 8 shots and 12 pts, though he still grabbed a game-high 19 rebs. But the defense also left his teammates open. SF Will Brown scored 18 pts on 8 of 14 to lead the way, and SG Ryan Frutos scored 17 pts including 3 threes. PF Erik Webb scored 16 pts, handed out 4 asts and grabbed 4 steals. And reserve G Thomas Caveness, who played most of the second half, finished with 13 pts, 6 rebs and 6 asts. All the points and most of the rest came after halftime. His running layup with just over a minute ended any remaining suspense and turned out to be the final bucket of the game.

The game was relatively even early on, and midway through the first half Moorpark led, 22-19. But then Oxnard went on a 16-2 run, and their lead never fell below 6 the rest of the way. A 6-0 rally just after halftime cut it to 44-38 but that was as close as they would get. The lead fluctuated between 8 and 12 after that.

Moorpark was led by PF Townsend, who scored 20 of his game-high 31 pts in the second half. He also grabbed 10 rebs. C Saad scored 10 of his 12 pts in the first half, and finished with a team-best 15 rebs. PG Anish Sharda dished out 12 asts but had a rough night shooting, finishing 0-for-9 from the floor and 2 of 4 from the FT line. Reserve G Adam Segal had a strong game for the Raiders, scoring 14 pts and grabbing 6 rebs.

Oxnard moves to 16-7 on the season, while Moorpark falls to 10-9.
