2010 Southern California CC Showcase - Friday

The 2010 Southern California Community College Showcase took place July 30 & 31 at Azusa Pacific University.

Here is a game-by-game summary for the 9 games I covered on Friday, July 30th:

Fullerton 49, Baseline To Baseline (Oxnard) 35:

SF Kunnu Shofu had 12 pts and Ctr Jason Williams had 10 pts and 5 rebs to lead Fullerton to a 14-point win in the event's first game.

Baseline, a team of players from Oxnard College, led early, 19-15. But then Fullerton went into the lead, taking a 31-22 halftime advantage after a 3-pointer by PF Adam Eakles in the final seconds of the first half. Baskets by Williams and Shofu pushed the margin to double digits at 37-25 early in the second half, and Fullerton led comfortably the rest of the way.

PF Omar Ibraham led Oxnard with 9 pts, and SF Philip Holmes had 8.

Saddleback 55, LA Trade Tech 54:

In a closely-contested battle between two of the top teams at the event, defending California state champion Saddleback got 2-pt free throws from SF Mason Jones and PG Donovan Poole in extra time to edge LA Trade Tech.

This one was close all the way. Trade Tech jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening minutes, but Saddleback went on a 13-2 run to lead, 15-9, after a Jones 3-pointer. Trade Tech got back within a point at halftime after a 2-pt free throw by SF Tim Johnson in the last minute of the first half.

Trade Tech went in front, 24-23, early in the first half on a basket by Ctr Tyrone Lyons, and the lead went back and forth the rest of the way. Neither team led by more than five points, and Saddleback held a 51-50 lead at the end of regular time.

In extra time, the lead went back and forth. Trade Tech went in front when Saddleback called its second timeout of the half (each team was allowed just one) and PF Martin Whitmore made the 2-pt technical free throw, but Jones answered with a 2-pt free throw to put Saddleback ahead, 53-52. Then Lyons hit a short jumper to put Trade Tech in front, 54-53. But Poole's 2-pt free throw made it 55-54, bringing Saddleback to the target score of 55.

Ctr Wendell Faines led Saddleback with 10 pts, 9 rebs and 3 blocked shots. PF Prince Obasi had 8 pts and 9 rebs, while Jones and SG Marquis Green had 7 pts each. Poole finished with 6 pts, a team-high 5 asts and 2 steals.

For Trade Tech, Whitmore had a game-high 15 pts and a taem-high 4 rebs. Lyons had 14 pts on 7-for-10 from the floor plus 4 blocked shots. PF Clint Bozner had 9 pts while Johnson had 8 pts and a team-high 5 asts.

Victor Valley 52, LA Harbor 49:

PF Amos Battle had 18 pts and SF Shawn Weeks hit the game-clinching 3-pointer in extra time as Victor Valley won a close one from LA Harbor.

The teams were tied, 47-47, after regular time, and were tied again when Weeks drained the game-winning shot to finally get VVC the win in a game that was closely-contested throughout.

The first half ended with the score tied, 20-20. Neither team led by more than four points until Harbor took a 36-31 lead in the second half, only to see Victor Valley score the game's next seven points to lead, 38-36, after a 2-pt free throw by Moss. Then Harbor answered with a 7-0 run of its own to lead, 43-38, after a 3-pt play by SF Kevin Dawson. But Victor Valley rallied to tie the score at 47 on a 3-point play by PF Aaron Dutcher with 28.6 seconds left in regular time. It was tied at 47 as the clock expired and again at 49 before Weeks' game-winning shot.

Moss led all scorers with his 18 pts, getting to the line 7 times, and had 3 steals. Dutcher and Weeks each had 7 pts, and Ctr Katron Fields had 6 pts and a team-high 6 rebs. SG Jordan Thornton had 4 pts and a team-high 4 asts.

For Harbor, PG Lemmie Crockem had 10 pts, 4 asts and a game-high 5 steals. PF Danny Morris and SF Tyler Schreckengost each had 8 pts and 3 rebs; Schreckengost was 4-for-4 from the floor.

San Bernardino Valley 50, Los Medanos 37:

SG Keon Pledger had 10 pts and 4 asts as SBVC led virtually wire to wire in a 50-37 win over Los Medanos.

SBVC led 22-13 at halftime after a basket by SF James Sanders on an inbounds play late in the half. LMC got within five points at 22-17 early in the second half, but then SBVC went on a 12-0 run to put the game away, making its first five field goal attempts of the second half. A 3-pointer by PF Kelvin Smith pushed the margin to 20 points at 44-24 with just over six minutes remaining.

Sanders and SF DaSean Anderson each had 8 pts for the winners. PG David Rawlinson, one of the few returnees from the SBVC team that reached the state semifinals last spring, had 4 pts and a game-high 5 asts.

For Los Medanos, Ctr Corey Douglas had a huge game with game-highs of 20 pts and 7 rebs. But nobody else on Los Medanos scored more than 6 points, and LMC shot 29% from the floor for the game.

Glendale 57, LA Harbor 29:

Glendale shot 58% from the floor and held Harbor to a paltry 22%, and somehow got 18 players into the game as well in a 57-29 thrashing of Harbor.

Glendale built a 32-18 halftime lead, and then scored the first seven points of the second half, pushing the margin beyond 20 points and putting the game out of reach early.

Ctr Antonio Garrett and SG Danny Lawton led the Vaqueros with 9 pts each. SF Demetrius Perkins had 7 pts. SG Narbeh Ebrahamian had 6 pts and 2 asts, and PF Sulaiman Sekamwa had 6 pts and a game-high 5 rebs.

Glendale was playing in a summer event for what is believed to be just the second time ever. A friendly suggestion to the Vaquero staff...when playing in an exposure event it's to your benefit to wear jerseys with numerals that are visible from more than a few feet away.

PF Danny Morris led Harbor with 8 pts on 3-for-4 from the floor. However, his teammates combined for just 8-for-47 (17%) and Glendale gathered most of those missed shots, building a 34-23 rebounding advantage.

Desert 57, Grossmont 45:

SG Chaz Pio had 19 pts, 4 asts and 4 steals to lead Desert to a 59-47 win over Grossmont in the first game of the evening session of the 2010 Southern California CC Showcase at Azusa Pacific.

After the score was tied at 23 at halftime, Pio scored a pair of baskets to give Desert a 27-23 lead to begin the second half, and COD led the rest of the way. A jumper by PF Rodrick Massey pushed the lead to double figures at 44-34 with 7:30 left, and Pio pushed the margin to 14 at 50-36 with a jumper with 5:20 remaining.

Grossmont got within nine points and looked like it would push the game to a target score, but then Ctr David Ward scored on a putback and was awarded the extra point for being fouled, just ahead of the final buzzer. That made it 57-45, beyond the 10-point minimum margin to avoid playing to the target score.

SF Drew Johnson had 11 pts for Desert. Ward had 7 pts, a team-high 6 rebs and 2 blocked shots.

For Grossmont, SF Treyvon Ash and SG Zach Moss each had 11 pts.

Antelope Valley 61, Santa Ana 48:

SG Nick Bennett made his first six shots from the floor, including 4 threes, and finished with 16 pts as Antelope Valley led wire-to-wire in a decisive win over Santa Ana.

AVC began the game on a 7-0 run, then pushed the margin to double figures at 16-4 after a 3-pointer by Bennett. Then a 3-point play by PF Gary Winfield made it 22-6. The lead reached 20 at 26-6 late in the first half and AVC led by 15 at halftime, 35-20.

Santa Ana got within 8 points at 42-34 early in the second half after a 3-pointer by Ctr David Swartz. But baskets by Ctr Kyisean Reed and Bennett pushed the AVC lead back to a dozen at 46-34, and the Marauders were never threatened after that. A 3-point play by Reed made it 51-36 and a jumper by Ctr Charles Cole made it 53-36 with 7:47 left. Then a 2-pt free throw by SF Shelton Boykin made it 55-36.

Bennett led all scorers with his 16 pts, finally missing his last shot attempt to finish 6-for-7 from the floor. SF Jason Logan had 10 pts. Winfield had 9 pts, Reed had 7 and PF George McGrew had 4 pts and a team-high 8 rebs.

For Santa Ana, SF Tabrion Leverette had 15 pts. PF Dominic Freeman had 14 pts and 8 rebs, and Swartz had 9 pts, 8 rebs, 3 blocks and 3 steals.

Palomar 63, Porterville 56:

Palomar saw a double-digit lead in each half disappear, but finished the game with an 11-4 run to edge Porterville, 63-56, in Friday's penultimate game.

Palomar jumped out to a 26-14 lead in the first half, but Porterville scored the final nine points of the half to trail by just three, 26-23, at the break. But Palomar pushed its lead back to ten at 44-34 after a 3-point play by SG Marcel Moore with just more than 12 minutes remaining in regular time.

Porterville rallied again, however, tying the score when PG Donald Lee scored on a runner with 1:35 left to make it 52-52.

Then Palomar answered with a 7-0 spurt to finish regular time, going back in front on a 3-point play by PF Jeremy Ford. Then Ford made a 2-pt free throw with 32.1 seconds left to make it 57-52. A 2-pt free throw by SF Ray Purtle made it 59-52. with 18.9 seconds left.

The 7-point margin pushed the game to extra time, and Porterville got within five points at 61-56 when PG Justin Padilla grabbed a steal and went in for the lay-up to reach the target score of 63 and clinch the win for Palomar.

Moore and SG Stephen Caldwell each had 11 pts to lead Palomar; Caldwell added 5 rebs and 2 asts while Moore had 4 rebs, 2 asts and 2 steals. Purtle had 10 pts and Ford had 9 pts plus 4 rebs. Padilla had 4 pts, 4 rebs, a team-high 4 asts and 2 steals.

For Porterville, Ctr Nate Brown had 10 pts plus game-highs of 8 rebs and 4 blocked shots. PG Gerry Gilmore had 10 pts, 4 asts and 2 steals. SG Alton Williams came off the bench and also scored 10 pts.

Antelope Valley 47, Compton 34:

In the Grand Finale of the day, Antelope Valley got the weekend's only double-double from Ctr Kyisean Reed and avenged a loss to Compton last weekend at the HAX.

It felt like anything but a summer showcase exhibition. It was physical, it was intense, and AVC altered its 5-by-5 substitution pattern of its earlier game and played its starters more minutes. Compton also relied heavily on its top six players throughout the game.

Midway through the first half, it was tied at 12. But then AVC scored the next eight points, taking a 20-12 lead after a 3-pointer by SG Nick Bennett. AVC briefly pushed the margin to ten points at 28-18 after a dunk by SF Shelton Boykin, but Compton cut the deficit back to eight at halftime and trailed, 28-20.

Then Compton scored the first five points of the second half to get within three points at 28-25. But after that, AVC gradually pulled away, pushing the lead back to nine points at 36-27 and then getting a 3-pointer from Reed to make it 39-27 with just over five minutes remaining. A traditional 3-point play by Reed made it 44-29 in the final minute, clinching the win and keeping the margin great enough to avoid playing to a target score.

Reed had 13 pts on 5-for-6 from the floor plus a game-high 10 rebs in a magnificent overall performance. Bennett had 7 pts and SF Jason Logan had 6. PF George McGrew had 4 pts and 8 rebs.

For Compton, SF Andrew Haley had 9 pts. SG Van Myers had 7 pts and 5 rebs.
