2013 Cerritos Slam - Sunday 7/28

Here is my game-by-game summary for the 6 games I attended at the 2013 Cerritos JUCO Slam on Sunday, July 28th.

Mt. San Jacinto 32, Fullerton 27:

Brandon Shaw scored 12 pts, including a couple of 3-pointers, as Mt. San Jacinto won a low-scoring game against Fullerton on the main court Sunday at the Cerritos JUCO Slam.

Points were tough to come by in this one, but Shaw gave Mt. San Jacinto a 17-12 lead with a 3-point play after a steal late in the first half. He added a 3-point field goal at the buzzer to end the half, giving Mt. San Jacinto a 20-14 lead.

Fullerton stayed close and got within four points on a pair of free throws by Ramez Michail with 1:30 left. Shaw split two free throws for Mt. San Jacinto with 1:08 left to make it 30-25.

Dakota Allinson scored off a pass from Joel Brokenbrough with 50 seconds left to get Fullerton within three points at 30-27. And Roger Hamel had a chance to get Fullerton closer with 7.6 seconds left, but missed two free throws. Amonte Dees made two free throws for Mt. San Jacinto with 0.3 seconds left to clinch the win.

Shaw was the only player for either team to score in double digits. Dees had 8 pts for Mt. San Jacinto, and Carlos McCormick had 4 pts plus a game-high 4 asts and a team-best 2 steals.

For Fullerton, Brokenbrough had a team-high 8 rebs and a game-high 10 rebs. Michail had 5 pts and 4 rebs. Hamel had 5 pts, 2 asts and 2 steals.

Miramar 34, Santa Ana 30:

Chris Sherwood scored 15 pts to lead Miramar to a 4-point win over Santa Ana, handing the Dons their first loss of the event after three comfortable wins.

This one was closely-contested all the way, a marked departure from other games for Santa Ana, which had won its first three games by double-digit margins. But the Dons shot just 23% for the game, and that proved to be their undoing.

Santa Ana held a narrow lead for most of the first half, and a 17-14 lead at halftime. Miramar tied the score at 17 on a free throw by Sherwood early in the second half and took a 19-17 lead on two free throws by Sherwood after a technical foul on Santa Ana's Jackson Gatlin.

The lead changed hands several times after that, with the score tied at 29 until a free throw by Miramar's Shane McPherson after a steal with 1:41 to go.

Justin Hebner made one of two free throws with 54.1 seconds left to give Miramar a 31-29 lead. Then Cole Brewer stole the ball near midcourt and scored on a bank shot to make it 33-29. Sherwood made one of two free throws with 3.0 seconds left to make it 34-30 and clinch the win.

Sherwood's 15 pts led all scorers and was the only player for either team to score in double digits. McPherson came off the bench for 8 pts an 2 asts. Brewer had 6 pts, 5 asts and 3 steals.

For Santa Ana, Dujuan Williams had 7 pts and 4 asts. Eric Emanuel had 5 pts, 5 rebs and game-highs of 3 asts and 4 steals. Cammeron Hill had 2 pts and a game-high 7 rebs.

Glendale 56, LA Trade Tech 46:

Emmitt Duvall II came off the bench and exploded for 23 pts and 7 rebs to lead Glendale to a 10-point win over LA Trade Tech.

LA Trade Tech started the game by scoring 3 baskets in the first minute, taking an immediate 6-0 lead. Glendale rallied to tie the score 8-8 after a 3-point play by Desmond Flentroy, but then Trade Tech took an 18-12 lead after a 3-pointer by Aaron Fitts. Glendale chopped that lead to a point at 20-19, but Trade Tech scored the final five points of the half to lead, 25-19, at the break.

But the second half belonged to Glendale, and specifically to the 6-7 Duvall, who scored 16 of his points and grabbed 6 of his rebounds after halftime. No other player in the game surpassed those totals for the entire game.

Duvall tied the score at 31 with a free throw. Gor Plavchyan scored to give Glendale a 33-31 lead, and then Jason Moore scored off a pass from Duvall to push the Glendale lead to four points at 37-33. Then Duvall threw down a slam dunk off an alley-oop pass from Sontiago Grady to give Glendale a 5-point lead at 41-36 with 5 minutes left.

After that, Glendale gradually pulled away. A 3-pointer by Edward Brown made it 46-40 with about 3 minutes left. Then Plavchyan threw down a dunk to make it 48-40 and scored off a pass from Jalen Etienne with 1:20 left to make it 50-40 and clinch the win for Glendale.

Duvall finished with his 23 pts on 7-for-8 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the line, and added the game-high 7 rebs as well as 2 asts. Plavchyan had 10 pts and 6 rebs. Flentroy had 3 pts and a team-high 5 asts.

For Trade Tech, Compton transfer Andre Blanding scored a team-best 13 pts. Fitts had 12 pts, all on 3-pointers, and 4 rebs. Andre Harris had 8 pts, 3 rebs, 2 asts and 2 steals. Donja Brooks had 4 pts and a game-high 6 asts.

Antelope Valley 47, Cerritos 38:

Daviyon Draper scored 17 pts and dished out 5 asts, and Zachary Hollis scored 15 pts as Antelope Valley won the battle of the host schools of the 2013 Cerritos JUCO Slam.

The event was held at Cerritos College, but it was organized by the staff at Antelope Valley, so it was only fitting the two schools would square off on the main court on the final afternoon.

Antelope Valley led virtually the entire game, jumping out to an early 17-4 lead, but Cerritos rallied to briefly lead with just under five minutes to go. But AVC went right back in front, finishing the game with a 14-3 run to get the victory.

Antelope Valley jumped out to an early 10-4 lead behind 8 points from Draper. Then Hollis made a free throw, and scored on a left-handed hook shot to make it 14-4. A 3-pointer by Darren Tooke made it 17-4, and it looked like it might be a rout.

But Cerritos fought back, closing the gap to single digits at 21-12 after a free throw by Victor Jones late in the first half to trail by just 9 at the break. And the Falcons scored the first two baskets of the second half to make it 21-16.

AVC pushed its lead back to 11 points at 31-20 after Draper hit a 3-pointer and then fed Tajee Shaw for a score midway through the second half.

But Cerritos kept rallying, and got within four points on a free throw by Jarion Henry with aobut 7 minutes left that made it 33-29. Then Jordan Reise drained a 3-pointer with 5:10 left to bring Cerritos within a point at 33-32. Then Iyke Akajiobi converted a 3-point play for Cerritos to give the Falcons a 35-33 lead.

But AVC went right back in front on a 3-point play by Hollis off a pass from Trey Anderson, and that started the game-ending 14-3 run. Hollis converted another 3-point play with 3:40 left to make it 39-35.

Cerritos got two free throws from Billy Glenn to get within two points at 39-37 with 2 minutes left, but then AVC slammed the door. Draper scored on a fadeaway jumper from the baseline to make it 41-37, and following a single free throw by Cerritos' Jones, Draper hit another short jumper with 40 seconds left to make it 43-38. Then he fed Kamal Holden for an alley-oop jam that made it 45-38 and clinched the win for AVC. Holden added two more free throws with 20.5 seconds left to close out the scoring.

Draper led all scorers with his 17 pts, which came on 6-for-8 from the floor, and his 5 asts were also game-high. Hollis had 15 pts on 5-for-8 from the floor and converted three 3-point plays in the second half.

For Cerritos, Glenn had a team-best 10 pts, most of which came from the free throw line, from which he was 5-for-6. Jones had 7 pts and Henry had 6 pts and 6 rebs, though he also had 6 turnovers.

Chaffey 63, LA Pierce 51:

Jeff Nibo scored 15 pts and Devyn Sampson scored 13 as Chaffey won a spirit-filled game over LA Pierce, 63-51.

It was a playoff-type atmosphere as the teams combined for 3 technical fouls, 2 ejections and a few testy remarks between Pierce coach Ed Babayan and acting Chaffey coach Jon Keller.

But it was Nibo and Sampson, who combined to make 11 of their 12 field goal attempts, including 6 three-pointers, who made the difference for Chaffey. Overall, the CHP shot a sizzling 67.7% from the floor for the game.

Pierce started the game fast, jumping out to an early 14-7 lead. But Chaffey rallied to tie the score at 14, and took a 17-16 lead on a Nibo 3-pointer. Sampson followed with a three and Nibo threw down an alley-oop jam after a steal & lob by Cassie Hough to push Chaffey's lead to 22-16.

Pierce cut the margin to three points to trail, 26-23, at the half, and took a lead early in the second half after a pair of baskets by Terrel Funches. The J.R. Williams scored after a steal by Montel Shirley to push the Brahma lead to three at 29-26.

But then Chaffey went on a 12-2 run to take a lead, and led the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by Darrick Arnold gave Chaffey a 31-29 lead, and a short jumper by Pape Automane Seck made it 33-29. Sampson made a 3-pointer and Hough scored on a lay-up to make it 38-31. Another Sampson three pushed the lead to double digits at 52-42 and another Nibo three made it 57-44 with about six minutes left, essentially clinching the win for Chaffey.

Nibo finished with a game-high 15 pts on 6-for-7 from the floor, including 3 threes. Sampson was 5-for-5 from the floor with 3 threes for his 13 pts. Roderick Evans-Taylor had 9 pts on 4-for-5 from the floor. Hough had 6 pts and 5 asts, and Breejae Flonnoy had 4 pts and a team-high 7 asts.

For Pierce, Funches had a team-high 14 pts plus 4 rebs and 2 steals. Victor Evans had 10 pts and 3 asts. Shirley had 9 pts, 5 asts and 2 steals, and Williams had 8 pts and 7 asts.

OC Pride 61, Cypress 59:

Codye Hatcher had 16 pts, 5 rebs and 5 blocked shots, including 2 at the rim in the final minute of the game as OC Pride held on for a narrow win over Cypress in the final game of the 2013 Cerritos JUCO Slam.

OC Pride, an independent team, was clinging to a 57-54 lead when Hatcher, who just finished his sophomore season at LA Pierce, blocked two successive lay-up attempts right in front of the basket. Then after Cypress finally did score with 10 seconds left, Hatcher took an outlet pass and scored to make it 59-56. Two free throws from Isaiah Hicks with 1.3 seconds left clinched the win for OC Pride. Cypress' Robby Weaver made a long 3-pointer as the final horn sounded to close out the scoring.

That was the final chapter in a back-and-forth game in which neither team led by more than 7 points. OC Pride jumped out to an early 14-7 lead, but Cypress rallied to take a 22-20 lead on a 3-pointer by Jerred Cook. OC Pride went back in front on a 3-pointer by Andrew Ortiz and led 28-22 late in the half. Kerdt Elisaldez made a free throw for Cypress with the first half clock at zeroes to make it 28-24, but left the game at that point with a sore foot and/or ankle, not to return.

OC Pride led by 7 points again at 31-24 after a 3-pointer by Adrian Francis in the opening seconds of the second half. But Cypress rallied with a 10-0 run, tying the score on a putback basket by Jesse Henderson-Lewis and taking a 34-31 lead on a 3-pointer by Mark Townes. A 3-pointer by Jay Pena pushed Cypress' lead to six at 39-33.

Then it was OC Pride's turn to rally, and the Pride took a 40-39 lead on a 3-point play by Dreymon Jones midway through the second half. The lead went back and forth over the next few minutes and was tied at 47 when Hatcher again asserted himself.

Hatcher broke the 47-all tie with a slam dunk. Jason Payne scored to make it 51-47, and then Hatcher made a driving lay-up to make it 53-47 with just over 4 minutes to go.

Cypress got within one point when Jordan Fleck scored on a putback of his own miss to make it 55-54. But then came another slam dunk by Hatcher to make it 57-54, and the two blocks at the rim and the basket on the outlet pass to keep the OC Pride in control.

Hatcher finished with a game-high 16 pts on 8-for-11 from the floor, adding 5 rebs, 3 asts, 2 steals and 5 blocked shots to earn Most Outstanding Player honors for the event. After helping LA Pierce to a share of the WSC-North division title last season, Hatcher is currently looking to sign with a 4-year program. Academics will keep him out of Division I but he is reportedly available right now for the Division II or NAIA level.

Payne came off the bench for 14 pts, including 4 three-pointers, and his twin brother Tyler Payne added 5 pts and one 3-pointer. Francis had 8 pts, 3 asts and 2 steals. Jones had 7 pts, as did Ortiz, a member of 2013 California State Champion Mt. San Antonio.

For Cypress, Weaver ended up as the leading scorer with 11 pts including the buzzer-beating 3-pointer, his 3rd trey of the game. Josh Currenton had 7 pts and Henderson-Lewis had 6 pts and 4 rebs. Dom Palmer had 4 pts and a team-high 5 rebs, and Townes had 3 pts and a game-high 5 asts.
