2005 Beach Camp: Game-by-Game Summary

Here is a game-by-game summary for the 14 games I attended at the 2005 Beach Baskteball Camp June 24-25-26, 2005 at the Long Beach Pyramid.

I managed to see each of the 22 teams at the camp at least once.

I've also linked to the box scores below.

SO...without further adieu...

The 2005 Beach Basketball Camp
at the Long Beach State Pyramid

Friday 6:40 pm:
The Bolts (Cypress) 59, Team 605 (Cerritos) 55
SG Eric Taylor scored 22 pts including 4 threes to lead the Bolts to the win. SF Houstan Downey also reached double figures with 10 pts, and he pulled down a team-best 7 rebounds. PG Lance Convento dished out 5 assists for the winners, while SF Ritchie Cole proved an athletic presence inside with 5 blocks. Team 605 lost despite a marvelous performance from PG Cortez Ward, who posted totals of 20 pts, 11 rebs and 5 asts. Kyle Ferros added 13 pts and 6 boards.

7:50 pm
Team LB (Long Beach) 62, The Buzz (Fullerton) 59
SG Deon Tresvant nailed a three as the final horn sounded to lift Team LB to a 3-point win over The Buzz. As the final seconds dwindled, PG Chris Hart drove and dished out to Tresvant, who nailed the game-winning shot from the right wing.

SG Pearson Smith led all scorers with 17 pts and also grabbed a team-high 6 rebs. PF Eric Williams added 15 pts while SF Demetrius Hazel nailed 3 threes and finished with 10 pts. The Buzz was led by PF Roderick Johnson, who had team-bests of 16 pts and 6 rebs. Ctr Michael Earl added 13 pts, 4 rebs and 4 blocks for the Buzz, which had led 24-22 at the half.

9 pm
Van Nuys (LA Valley) 62, Team 605 (Cerritos) 54
PF John Regis led Van Nuys with 14 pts, 9 rebs and 4 blocked shots and PG Rai Colston added 7 pts and 6 asts as Van Nuys led most of the way. SF Arieus Lowery had a strong game as well with 9 pts and 7 rebs. For Team 605, PG Cortez Ward led the way with 15 pts, 9 rebs, 4 asts and 3 steals while SF Aaron Thompson had 12 pts and 8 boards. Ctr Isiah Bridget also reached double figures with 10 pts plus 7 rebs and 4 blocks.

Saturday 10 am
V-Town (Ventura) 82, The Dawgs (East LA) 78
SF Charles Dillon scored 21 pts and PG Hylas Smith added 19 (5 threes) to lead V-Town to a win in the weekend's highest-scoring game. V-Town had just 6 players available, but 5 of them scored in double figures. PF Danny Mena (17 pts, 10 rebs) and PF Djadji Daffe (10 pts, 11 rebs) both posted double-doubles, and SG David Van Someren had a strong overall game with 13 pts, 8 rebs and 6 asts.

The Dawgs lost despite a marvelous effort from its highly-regarded backcourt. PG Andrew Gomez had 17 pts, 9 rebs and 5 asts while SF/SG Steve Monreal led all scorers with 24 pts. PF C.J. Gerardo also reached double digits with 10 pts. But the Dawgs were outrebounded 46-28, which proved to be too much to overcome.

11:10 am
S. Orange County (Saddleback) 77, El Centro (Imperial Valley) 43
SF Gerard Anderson scored 16 pts and PF Damien Stokes aded 15 to lead S. Orange County to an easy win. Anderson made 7 of 9 shots from the floor and also grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds. In all, 8 different players scored at least 5 points for S. Orange. PG Rafik Henderson had a solid game with 6 pts and 4 asts. SG Cameron Robinson led El Centro with 15 pts. Ctr Brandon Burgess had 9 pts and a team-best 9 boards.

12:20 pm
Palm Springs (Desert) 57, 3 Point Play (SD Mesa) 35
PF Princeton Joshua scored 10 pts and grabbed 8 boards to lead a balanced attack for Palm Springs in a dominant win over the 3 Point Play team. After falling behind 7-3 as SF James Milt made his first 3 shots (including a three), Palm Springs went on a 13-0 run to take a 16-7 lead and pushed its lead to 30-11 by halftime.

SF Julius Lang had 9 pts while PF Bertice Hayes and SF Ruben Mitchell each had 8. Mitchell, a still-unsigned graduating sophomore and the 2004-05 JCHoops.com Defender of the Year, made 4 of 5 shots from the floor and added 6 rebounds, 3 blocks and a steal.

Milt led 3 Point Play with 10 pts and 6 boards.

1:30 pm
Compton Magic (club) 76, San Marcos (Palomar) 61
The host, club team Compton Magic, put on a spectacular aerial display with at least a dozen dunks in a 15-point win over a game but physically overmatched San Marcos squad.

Compton had five players in double figures, including 6-10 PF Jerome Habel, who had 10 pts and 8 rebs. A trio of San Bernardino Valley players scored 10 points each: SG DeWayne Pettus (who also had 5 steals), 6-9 PF Keith Darden and 6-11 Ctr Ephraim Williams. SF Chris Berry, who played at Fresno State in 2004-05, had 8 pts, 4 rebs and 3 asts. And the Magic also brought in an underage talent from the community: HS sophomore PG Jesse Woodard, who helped Centennial to the 2004 D-3 state championship, added 8 pts and 7 asts.

For San Marcos, SF John Hoteling and Ctr Chris Petrovic each scored 9 pts while PG Emanuel Alcala and PF Matt Twamley each had 8. But San Marcos had just one player taller than 6-5 (Compton had six players at least 6-5) and couldn't match the Magic's athleticism. Still, it was a strong effort to stay within 15 of a team that will be competing in the national Jerry Mullen JUCO Tourney next month in Tulsa.

2:40 pm
Cucamonga (Chaffey) 73, Inland Empire (Riverside) 61
SG Larry Dew scored 13 pts and SF T.J. Smith added 13 to lead Cucamonga to an impressive win over a tough Inland Empire team. Smith also dished out 4 asts and grabbed 4 steals for the winners. PF Chris Brown added 10 pts. In all, the Cucamonga pressure wreaked havoc on Inland Empire, grabbing 18 steals and forcing 28 turnovers.

For Inland Empire, PF Chron Tatum had a very strong game with 18 pts on 8-of-9 shooting. SF Travon Williams added 11 pts and 7 rebs. PG Kyle Watkins dished out a team-high 4 asts.

3:50 pm
The Entertainers (LA Trade Tech) 65, S. Orange County (Saddleback) 44
SG Sean Terrell scored 22 pts to lead The Entertainers, perhaps the most impressive school-related team on the weekend, to a dominant win over a very good S. Orange County team. Terrell made 8 of 12 shots from the floor, including 4 threes, and had 14 pts before halftime as the Entertainers built a double-digit lead at intermission.

SG Brandon Drayton had a strong game for The Entertainers with 11 pts and 6 rebs. And PG Derrick Hankins had a big game as well with 11 pts and 5 asts.

PF Tim Miller led S. Orange with 12 pts and 6 rebs, while SF Gerard Anderson added 9 pts and 6 boards. But S. Orange shot just 31% from the floor and committed 23 turnovers.

5 pm
No Limit (Victor Valley) 66, 3 Point Play (SD Mesa) 54
SF Kevin Morrow scored 17 points and PF Victor Barner added 15 as No Limit finished Saturday's slate with a 12-point win. Barner led all rebounders with 9 boards, while Morrow and PG Andrew Ellis each had 8; in all, No Limit won the battle of the boards by a remarkable 58-30 margin.

PF James Milt continued his strong play, again leading 3 Point Play in scoring (18 points) and rebounding (7 boards). Ctr Josh Lipscomb also reached double figures in the scoring column with 10 pts.

Sunday 10 am :
Cucamonga (Chaffey) 97, San Diego Cougars (various) 60
From the beginning, this looked like a mismatch as Cucamonga not only had beaten a good Inland Empire team on Saturday, but had 11 players available. Meanwhile, the Cougars had just 5 players. That meant no substitutes, and that would be deadly against a pressing team like Cucamonga.

And Cucamonga jumped out to a 23-5 lead early on en route to an easy win. SG Larry Dew and SF T.J. Smith each scored 16 points while SF Chris Brown added 15. Dew also dished out a game-high 7 asts. PGs Mike Moreno and Vince Alvarado each had 11 pts. And Cucamonga totalled 27 steals (Moreno and Ronnie Bullock led the way with 5 each) and forced 36 Cougar turnovers.

But the big story of this game was the play of PF Andre Johnson of Clarendon (TX) College. For the day, he made 10 of 20 shots, including 5 threes, for a total of 31 points. That's by far the highest total I've ever seen anyone score in a JC showcase event (since the games are running time there just isn't enough time for high statistical totals). He also grabbed 8 rebounds. Though the pace of the game and his team's lack of subs undoubtedly helped his numbers, it was still an excellent performance.

11:10 am
Westside (West LA) 51, Oceanside (Mira Costa) 44
PG Joseph Bolden and SF Lester Clay each scored 11 pts as a deep Westside team past Oceanside. Bolden added 5 steals for the winners. PG Harold (nee J.R.) Martinez had 8 pts and SF Curtis Sumlin added 6 for Westside, which led virtually the whole way. PG Ricky Martinez of Oceanside led all scorers with 17 pts.

12:20 pm
N-Flight (Pasadena) 46, S. Orange County (Saddleback) 43
An alley-oop from PG Jamaal Hall to Ctr Deon Marcus with 20 seconds left resulted in a 3-point play on a slam dunk, foul and free throw by Marcus to give N-Flight a 44-43 lead after trailing virtually the entire game in a win vs. S. Orange County.

That play culminated a strong finish for N-Flight, which trailed by 6-8 points for most of the second half. Much of the rally was led by PG Hasan Moody, whoh made 6 of 7 FGs plus 3 FTs for a game-high 15 points including 13 in the second half. Hall added 4 pts plus a game-high 5 asts, the final one coming on the game-winning play. SG Harold Cleveland, Moody's HS teammate at Muir HS, added 8 pts for the winners.

For S. Orange, Ctr Terrance Harris led the way with 11 pts while Golden West transfer SF Richard Cobbs added 10.

1:30 pm
Inland Empire (Riverside) 63, Team DCB (Barstow) 46
PF Angel Alamo scored 11 pts and grabbed 5 rebs to lead Inland Empire to the win in the event finale.

Alamo led all scorers and rebounders, a remarkable feat for any I.E. player in that they rotated 15 players into the game. PG Kyle Watkins continued his strong play with 7 pts and a game-high 5 asts.

The most memorable moment of the game occured when DCB PG Dominic Priestley drove towards the basket midway through the second half only to run into mammoth I.E. Ctr Armando Cosio (who is 6-10 and 370 pounds). The 5-9 Priestley bounced off him and fell to the floor, managing to pass the ball to a teammate. Cosio hardly seemed to notice the collision. But after regaining his feet, Priestley got the ball back and drove again down the lane towards Cosio only to be met by the giant Center and knocked to the floor once again. But this time a foul was called on Cosio, who was late getting into position. Then Priestley gathered himself, went to the line, and made both free throws. It may not have been enough to win the game for DCB, but it was enough to make quite an impression for courage and toughness!

For his part, Cosio had a strong overall game as well, making 5 of 6 shots from the floor for 10 points and grabbing 4 rebounds.
