The event took place over three days, with games on three different courts going on simultaneously. Here is a game-by-game summary of the 12 games I watched, which featured all 17 affiliated teams as well as both Compton Magic teams and three more “assembled” teams.

Saturday – 10 am: Say No (West LA) 55, The Dawgs (East LA) 43
Josh Gordon scored 19 points and Darryl Taylor added 10 as Say No topped The Dawgs in the first Saturday game.
Say No jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the early going, only to see The Dawgs rally to take a 14-11 lead and hold a 27-23 edge at halftime behind the sharpshooting of Danny Vasquez. At intermission, Vasquez had 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 3 threes. But in the second half, Vasquez was held scoreless as Say No rolled to the win.
Vasquez still led The Dawgs with 14 points, and was the team’s only scorer in double figures. Mike Lai pulled down a game-high 8 rebounds while Adrian Muniz dished out a game-high 6 assists for The Dawgs.

11 am: Panorama Hoops (Bakersfield) 69, 49ers 51
Jimmy Scroggins came off the bench to score 16 points on 5-of-5 shooting to lead Panorama Hoops to a decisive win over the 49ers. Scroggins made all five of his shots from the field, including 3 threes, to lead all scorers.
Maurice Lane also had a strong game for Panorama with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Terrance Palmer added 12 points plus a game-high 8 rebounds. Johnny Machado was solid as well with 7 points and a game-high 7 assists.
The 49ers led 12-11 in the early going, but Panorama got the needed spark from Scroggins and quickly recovered to build a 41-26 halftime lead. The 49ers cut the margin to single digits at 54-45 early in the second half, but an 11-0 run for Panorama then put them in control of the game again.
For the 49ers, Donald Thomas (Palm Beach FL) led the way with 15 points on 6-of-7 from the floor. Twin brother Mychal (Santa Ana) and Brett Miller (undecided) each had 7 for the 49ers.

12 noon: V-Town (Ventura) 53, Team SA (Santa Ana) 45
Danny Tavares had an absolutely dominant game for V-Town, scoring 18 points and pulling down 17 rebounds, to lead V-Town to the win. The rebound total is the highest single-game total I’ve recorded in the nine JC showcases I’ve covered over the last few years.
David Van Someren and Tommy Young each added 9 points while Trevor Breland had 7 points and a game-high 6 assists.
The game was very even until Young scored 7 of his points on a quick 7-0 run midway through the second half. Young was fouled attempting a 3-point shot, and when Team SA’s Matt Goodloe protested the call, he was assessed a technical foul. Goodloe then made 4 of the 5 resulting free throws, and added a 3-point field goal moments later to put V-Town ahead, 36-29. They held a lead the rest of the way.
For Team SA, Cameron Gray led the way with 14 points. Michael Hernandez added 9 points and a team-best 8 rebounds. A.J. Laguana had 5 points plus 4 assists and 3 steals.

1 pm: The Entertainers (LA Trade Tech) 55, Team Desert (College of the Desert) 46
Rico Myles scored 11 points and Imari Thomas added 10 plus 7 rebounds as The Entertainers got the win over Team Desert.
The Entertainers jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead as Team Desert began the game by missing its first 7 shots, and held a commanding 27-15 lead at the half. But Team Desert rallied, taking a 35-34 lead early in the second half. From there, however, The Entertainers pulled away again, this time for good.
Justin Spencer led Team Desert with 12 points, all in the second half, and fueled the comeback bid. DeAndre James added 9 plus 3 assists and 4 steals.

2 pm: No Limit (Victor Valley) 62, V-Town (Ventura) 48
In what was probably the weekend’s biggest upset, No Limit got a true team performance and toppled mighty V-Town.
Three No Limit players – Victor Barner, Jaron Buchanan and Kevin Morrow – scored 11 points each and all ten No Limit players scored in the win. No Limit shot 51% for the game, and had just 9 turnovers.
No Limit led, 15-11, in the early going before a steal, basket and free throw by Robert Wright gave V-Town a 16-15 lead. But No Limit scored the next 7 points to take a 22-16 lead, and led at the half, 28-26. And early in the second half, No Limit pushed their lead to double digits at 36-26 after a steal and basket by Eli Thornton, and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
V-Town lost despite a spectacular effort by ’06 graduate David Van Someren. A key part of two WSC-North champion Ventura squads, Van Someren totaled 22 points, including 4 threes, and grabbed 6 rebounds. He is one of a handful of unsigned sophomores who participated in the weekend’s event, and no doubt generated some interest with this strong performance.
But the only other V-Town player to score more than 6 points was Danny Tavares, who managed 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. The other five V-Town players shot a collective 18% (4-for-22) from the floor, a far cry from the strong team-wide support No Limit had.

3 pm: Compton Magic 60, San Marcos (Palomar) 59
A short jumper by Ervin Dunson (San Diego City) with 4.7 seconds left, which followed a scoring outburst by defending state scoring champion Rishawn Norwood (Mt. San Antonio), lifted the club team Compton Magic to a 60-59 win over San Marcos.
It was a heartbreaking loss for San Marcos, which led 34-22 at halftime and held a double-digit advantage for most of the game. But Norwood’s three consecutive 3-pointers late in the game brought the Magic to within 2 points at 58-56, and a steal & basket by Larry Dew (Chaffey) tied it a 58 with just under a minute left. San Marcos’ Curtis Bush made a free throw with 35 seconds left to put San Marcos back in front, 59-58, but that just set the stage for Dunson to make the game-winning shot.
Norwood finished with 18 points, including 4 threes for the Magic. Dew added 13 plus 3 assists and 3 steals. Jesse Woodard, a senior at Centennial HS in Compton, started at point guard for the Magic and finished with 9 points, 3 assists and 3 steals. One of those assists came on Dunson’s game-winning shot.
For San Marcos, it was a very strong performance even in defeat, and suggests that Palomar may be the team to beat in the Pacific Coast Conference in 2006-07. Chris Jackson led all scorers with 23 points, including 3 threes, while Christ Holloway added 16 points plus a game-high 5 assists. Bush had 13 points plus game-highs of 7 rebounds and 4 steals.

4 pm: Route 66 (Barstow) 76, Central Coast (Cuesta) 59
Quentin Brinkley posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Route 66 to an easy win over an outmanned Central Coast squad.
Central Coast only had five players available, and Route 66 took advantage of that by pressing for virtually the entire game. All twelve Route 66 players scored at least a basket, and their superior depth helped Route 66 extend a 40-34 halftime lead into a commanding advantage in the second half.
Tony Story had a strong game with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals for Route 66.
For Central Coast, James Yanez led the way with 21 points. Jordan Bucklaw added 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Chris Silzer also scored in double figures with 10 points.

6 pm: The Panthers 78, 3-Point Play Black (San Diego Mesa) 75
The Panthers, a team made up mostly of unsigned sophomores, got a huge game from Alex Nixon (Cerritos) and strong support from Demon Jackson (LA Southwest), LeBoise Gladden (Santa Monica) and Jaquain Weary (Cerritos) and held off a late charge for the win.
Nixon, an unsigned sophomore, played point guard and totaled 13 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals in the win. He mostly played either power forward or center for Cerritos, but this game gave him a chance to showcase his overall game, including some strong guard skills.
J. Weary added 17 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks, while Jackson added 16 points, including 3 threes. Gladded added 14 points and 8 rebounds.
3-Point Play – one of two teams made up of players from San Diego Mesa – trailed most of the game before a late charge brought them to within striking distance. But Weary blocked Dave Vallerjo’s last-second potential game-tying shot, allowing the Panthers to hold on for the win.
Brett Lauer led 3-Point-Play with 25 points, including 3 threes. Lamar Thomas had 17 pints while Roderic Wilson had 12 points plus 5 assists and 3 steals.

Sunday – 10 am:
Cucamonga (Chaffey) 52, The Beach (Long Beach) 45 - OT
In a showdown between perhaps the two top teams in the event, Mike Strawberry put on an amazing show to lead Cucamonga (Chaffey) to an overtime win over The Beach (Long Beach).
It was a typical Chaffey game in many ways, including a slow start. Cucamonga fell behind 11-0 in the early going, committing 6 turnovers on its first 8 possessions. Cucamonga then rallied by scoring the game’s next 10 points to make it 11-10, but The Beach pulled away to lead by 7 at halftime, 19-12.
In the second half, however, Strawberry came alive and rallied Cucamonga. He scored 10 points in one stretch, and then dished to Mykale Hall for a basket that gave Cucamonga its first lead at 37-35. In the second half, Strawberry scored 15 of his game-high 19 points, and dished out 3 assists.
But The Beach hung tough, getting a three from Deon Tresvant and a free throw by Damon Banks to overcome a 42-38 deficit in the final 1:24 and tying the game at 42. That’s where things stood at the end of regulation time, forcing the weekend’s only overtime game.
In the extra session, Cucamonga got baskets from Strawberry, Daryl Carlton and Bobby Kovach to take a lead. And four free throws by Alwyn Jordan allowed Cucamonga to hold onto that lead and post a 50-45 win.
It was an end-to-end game, and each team committed a staggering 24 turnovers. But Cucamonga shot 68% from the floor after halftime (after going 3-for-16 in the first half). And The Beach committed four of its turnovers during the 3-minute overtime period.
For Cucamonga, Strawberry finished with a game-high 19 points, a team-high 7 rebounds, 3 assists, a block and 2 steals. Jordan was the team’s next-highest scorer with 10 points, including the 4 free throws in overtime.
For The Beach, the excellent backcourt tandem of Tresvant (9 points, 4 assists) and Banks (10 points, 3 assists, 3 steals) led the way. Eric Williams added 8 points and a game-high 8 rebounds.

11 am: Kingsley Glass (Antelope Valley) 60, Team Diego (San Diego City) 43
Adeola Dagunduro scored 13 points while Alex Mallari and Gino Riney added 10 points each as Kingsley Glass easily outpaced Team Diego.
Dagunduro, and all-conference selection at Mt. San Antonio in 2004-05, is one of several new arrivals at AVC this year. Mallari was an important of Fullerton’s undefeated state champion team last season, and of course new AVC coach Dieter Horton was in charge of that 37-0 Fullerton team.
Viney might have been Kingsley’s most outstanding performer. Coming off the bench, he scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting (2 threes) while adding 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a game-high 5 steals.
Kingsley Glass took an early lead, pushed the margin to 9 at the half, and was never threatened in the second half. A pair of threes by Shawn Brooks brought Team Diego a little closer early in the second half, but then Kingsley pulled away again.
Brooks led Team Diego with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including a pair of threes. But he was the only Diego scorer in double figures. Cornel Williams managed 9 points and 5 rebounds. Ervin Dunson had 6 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.

12 noon: OX (Oxnard) 63, The Eagles 61
OX got 14 points from Marcus Warren and 13 from Ronnie Frazier, and built a comfortable second-half lead, but had to withstand a final furious rally from The Eagles and barely held on for the win after Austin Autry’s potential game-winning 3-point shot bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
OX had a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double figures and a fifth, Aaron Wall, adding 8 points and reaching the double-digit mark in rebounds with 11. Rahim LeBlanc and Spencer Davis each had 10 points.
For The Eagles, Autry led the way with 18 points and 3 assists. Keith Cherry (Santa Ana) had 12 points while Donald Thomas (Palm Beach FL) had 9 and a team-best 8 rebounds.

1 pm: San Diego Magic 69, The 49ers 52
The club team San Diego Magic made its first 13 shots from the floor in the second half, extending a 1-point halftime lead into a rout over the 49ers in the weekend’s final game.
Brandon Glenn led the way for the Magic with 19 points while Robert Walton added 15 plus a game-high 9 rebounds. Emmen Preston added 13 points plus 8 boards. Anthony Palmer had 11 points plus a team-best 3 assists.
For the 49ers, Austin Autry, who played in his second straight game (after starring for the Eagles at noon), was again outstanding with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. But he was the only 49er in double figures. Donald Thomas (Palm Beach FL), also playing in his second straight game, had 9 points.
