Quick Facts
Chabot College is located in Hayward, just south of Oakland and just across the San Mateo Bridge from the peninsula. From the 880 going south, take the Winton Ave. exit and head west (right). Then turn south (left) on Hesperian Blvd. The school is on the right, and the gym is in the first (northernmost) group of buildings. From the 880 going north, get on the 92 heading west (towards the bridge). From the 92 (in either direction), take the Hesperian exit and go north about a mile. The signs will guide you. The school is on the left and the gym is in the last (northernmost) group of buildings.
Their Christmas tourney is always top-notch, and in 2003 it featured the mighty Fresno City College Rams (the California pre-season favorite).
Chabot is always one of the top programs in the North, despite the fact I never seem to see them win. Part of that is the competition - I've only seen them play other top teams - and the games are nearly always close, but it's getting weird. In early 1997, Foothill and Chabot were tied (in a game at Foothill) when a Foothill player had a chance to break a tie with 2 FTs with 2 seconds left. Not only did he miss both FTs, but he fouled Chabot's Kevin Sweetwyne trying for the rebound. Sweetwynne then went to the other end and made both his FTs to give Chabot a "gift" win. That was the first, last and only time I've seen Chabot win a game. Maybe next year, eh?
