SF Chris Bridges scored 7 of his 9 points in overtime as Antelope Valley finally found a way to get past a stubborn Compton team in the first game of the day at the SoCal Summer Heat shootout Thursday at CS Dominguez Hills.
It was a game of runs and huge momentum shifts, and even after building a 5-point lead in overtime AVC's win wasn't secure until SG Jason Johnson scored - after an assist from Bridges - the clinching basket in the final seconds.
Compton built a 24-18 lead late in the first half and led, 24-20, at halftime, but then AVC scored the first ten points of the second half to take a 30-24 lead.
Then Compton answered with a 14-0 run tot ake a 38-30 lead with just over seven minutes left. And a 3-point play by Ctr Dashawn Revels pushed Compton's lead to nine points at 41-32.
But Antelope Valley answered with a 14-3 run, tying the game at 44 with a basket by Ctr Dwan Caldwell and taking a 46-44 lead on a basket by SG Michaelynn Scott.
Compton went back in front on a 3-point play by SG Eddie Hughes with 31.7 seconds left. But AVC tied it when Caldwell grabbed a rebound, was fouled, and split a pair of free throws with 12.6 seconds left to make it 47-47.
In overtime, AVC took a quick lead on a basket by Scott and five straight points by Bridges, whose 3-point play made it 54-49. Compton stayed close but never quite caught up, and Johnson's basket finally clinched the win for Antelope Valley.
Scott came off the bench for AVC to score a game-high 12 pts, while Johnson had 11 pts and 4 asts and Bridges had 9 pts, 5 asts and 3 steals. PF Larry Slaughter had 8 pts and 5 rebs, and Caldwell came off the bench for 7 pts, 5 rebs and 4 blocked shots.
For Compton, SG Steve Pickens led all scorers with 17 pts and he also had 3 asts and 2 steals. Revels just missed a double-double with 9 pts and a game-high 11 rebs. SF Sylvester Thomas had 8 pts and a game-high 4 steals.
