There were 20 teams involved in the 2011 Charger Summer Showcase, July 8-9-10 at Cypress College.
I managed to see all 20 of them in a total of 12 games, including several teams twice.
And of course, all these opinions are my own. I've roughly followed the stats and results, but there is some subjective judgment involved as well.
I also finessed some of the positions to make sure the most deserving players are recognized. Only players/teams I saw were eligible, and the Honorable Mention selections are listed alphabetically (by guards, forwards & centers).
Most Outstanding Player:
Vaughn Autry, SG, Citrus Very simply, Vaughn was the most impressive player on the most impressive team in the event. Citrus went 4-0 for the weekend, including an eye-popping 49-point win over a very solid Miramar team in which Autry had 15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. He's a bounceback from the University of Montana who was a key part of Serra (Gardena's) 2009 California State Division III champions, and figures to continue what has become a tradition of dominance at Citrus.
Most Outstanding Team:
Citrus: When I saw them, they beat Miramar (a solid team) by a whopping 49 points. And the Owls dominated in several ways, generating 16 steals, shooting 50% from the floor, holding the Jets to less than 20% shooting and building a plus-20 rebounding advantage. They're deep, they're talented and they're good.
Special Mention:
Palomar: The Comets also went 4-0 on the weekend, and perhaps the most impressive aspect of that was victories in back-to-back games against two very athletic teams in Riverside and Long Beach without a break in between. An excellent backcourt is the team's greatest strength as the four primary guards combined for 29 points, 13 assists and just 4 turnovers against RCC.
