PG Jonathan Smith (of Westchester HS) scored 26 pts and PF LeBoise Gladden (Dorsey HS) came off the bench to add 19 as host Santa Monica (3-3) topped West Hills (5-1, #10 in Northern California) 80-69 at the SMC Sports Pavilion. Smith knocked down 4 threes, grabbed 4 steals and dished out a game-high 5 asts.
West Hills jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the early moments of the game, but Santa Monica ralliled to take a 19-18 lead midway through the first half. West Hills re-claimed a lead and was ahead 42-37 until the final seconds when SF Efrem Lawrence threw in a three-quarters-court overhand shot at the buzzer to cut the margin to 42-40.
West Hills pushed their lead to 10 at 50-40 when SMC missed its first 5 shots of the second half. But then Smith nailed a three, dished to SF Justin Goins for a basket and nailed another three to get the Corsairs back into it. A Smith steal + layup brought SMC to within 2 at 56-54 before a pair of FTs by SG Derrick Williams allowed the Corsairs to tie the game at 56 with 9:28 left. A three by Gladden gave SMC its first lead of the second half at 61-58 with 8:42 left.
And down the stretch, it was all Santa Monica as the Corsairs extended the lead to 61-56 on a putback basket by Goins. SMC pushed its lead back to 66-58 with 4:40 left with a crowd-pleasing alley-oop dunk on a pass from Smith to Gladden. WHC's Stan Harley knocked down a three to make it 66-61, but then SMC pulled away again on a post-move layup by Ctr Patrick Ndombasi, a pullup jumper by Smith and a steal and layup by Smith that made it 72-62. West Hills didn't threaten after that.
Harley led West Hills with 15 pts while SG David Lainhart and SF Jesse Griffin each added 13.
