Ctr Ivan Johnson scored 30 pts and grabbed 13 rebs to lead host LA Southwest (7-2) to a decisive win over Orange Coast (4-2) to cap Day 1 of the 2004 Intensity Classic. SF Eddie Dawson added 19 pts, 4 rebs and 4 asts in a strong all-around game. And PG Michael Woodard had a solid game as well with 8 pts and 8 asts.
Orange Coast led 8-7 in the early going after SG Lance Ortiz nailed a pair of threes, but then Johnson began to assert himself. The 6-8, 240-pounder scored 3 buckets and Dawson added a 3 during a 9-0 run that put the Cougars ahead, 16-8. LASW's lead reached 15 late in the first half before 5 pts by reserve SG Mykel Valentine cut the margin to 42-33 at the half.
In the second half, OCC missed 17 of its first 19 shots from the floor to allow LASW to take control of the game. Johnson continued his excellence, matching his first-half output of 15 points in the second half. And PG Donnell Wright excelled on the defensive end, blocking 5 shots and grabbing 7 of his 10 rebounds in the second half.
SF Reggie Brown led OCC with 12 pts though he finished just 4 of 16 from the floor. Ortiz added 11 pts, all in the first half. But the Pirates shot just 31% from the floor and were outrebounded 45-34.
