Antelope Valley 69, Saddleback 58

PF Reggie Murphy had 18 pts, 16 in the second half, and PG Da'Shawn Gomez had 16 as Antelope Valley topped host Saddleback, 69-58, in the consolation final of the 2011 Gaucho tournament.

Murphy, starting at power forward alongside Ctr Dwan Caldwell, was 6-for-7 from the floor, including 5-for-5 in the second half, and added 4 rebs and a team-high 4 asts to his game-high scoring total. And Gomez was 8-for-10 from the free throw line, including 4-for-6 in the final minute as AVC made 8 free throws to secure the win.

Antelope Valley (9-1) jumped out to an early 7-2 lead to start the game. Saddleback went on a 16-2 run to take an 18-9 lead midway through the first quarter, and also led, 20-11, at which point AVC had missed 15 of its first 18 shots from the floor.

But AVC, sparked by SF Jason Johnson, answered with a 13-0 run to take the lead. Johnson hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to get the Marauders within a point. When he finally missed, Ctr Vadal Faniel grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made two free throws to give AVC a 21-20 lead. Then Johnson passed to SF Terrance Berry, who drained a 3-pointer to make it 24-20.

Saddleback rallied to tie the score at 24, but never took another lead. Gomez hit two free throws to give AVC a 26-24 lead at the half, and the Marauders pushed their lead to 34-27 early in the second half after a jumper by Caldwell. Saddleback (6-4) drew within a point at 40-39 after a pair of baskets by SF Darnell Taylor, but AVC pushed its lead to 8 points at 49-41 after a basket by PF Larry Slaughter with about 9 minutes remaining.

Saddleback made one more push, drawing within a point again when Taylor again made consecutive baskets to make it 52-51 with 4:40 left. But two free throws by Johnson and a putback basket by Murphy pushed the lead back to 56-51. Then after a Gaucho basket, Johnson scored on a floater and Murphy scored from near the basket with 1:17 left to make it 61-53.

After that, Saddleback had little choice but to foul, and AVC made 8 of 10 free throws in the final minute to clinch the win. In addition to Gomez, Johnson and PGChris Bridges each made two free throws to seal the victory.

Taylor led Saddleback with 14 pts, and SG Aaron Brevard came off the bench for 13 pts including 3 threes. Ctr Devin Golston had 10 pts for the Gauchos. PG Miles Green did not score, partly because he took only three shots, but dished out a game-high 7 asts.
