Canada 66, DeAnza 50

Ctr Manny Martin had 18 pts and 14 rebs and was one of four players to score in double figures as host Canada (4-2) topped DeAnza (1-4) in a Coast Conference crossover game Tuesday night in Redwood City.

DeAnza began the game well, scoring the first 4 points and holding 9-3 lead in the early minutes.

But after that, Canada went on a 14-0 run to take a 17-9 lead after a 3-point play by SG Peter Pappageorge and a 3-point field goal by SG Michael Fazio. A pair of 3-point baskets by SF Ignas Pavilonis pushed the margin to 23-13, and the lead reached as much as 15 at 28-13 after a 3-pointer by Martin late in the half.

DeAnza cut the margin to 11 at the break, and rallied to within 4 points midway through the second half as Canada went more than 12 minutes into the second half without scoring a field goal. A driving lay-up by SG Jesse Estrada made it 43-37, and a basket by Ctr Daniel Mitchell off a pass from Estrada made it 43-39.

But Pavilonis ended the drought for Canada with a mid-range jumper with 7:58 left in the game and one second left on the shot clock, and after that the Colts pulled away. Martin made a pair of free throws to push the lead back to double digits at 52-42 with 5:18 left, scored after a pass from PG Bobby McCarthy to make it 54-42 with five mintues left, and made two more free throws to make it 56-42 with 4:25 left.

DeAnza got within 9 points at 59-50 on a driving lay-up by PG Walter Chappell with 2:08 left, but those would be the Dons' final points of the game. A 2-handed dunk by PF Steven Sanders after a steal by Pappageorge made it 61-50 with 59 seconds left and clinched the win for the Colts.

Martin, from powerhouse Fairfax HS in Los Angeles, had game-high point and rebound totals, and also had 3 blocks and 3 steals for the winners. Pavilonis had 17 pts and 8 rebs, Pappageorge had 16 pts and Sanders had 10 pts. McCarthy had just 2 pts but dished out a game-high 8 asts.

For DeAnza, SF Darrien Broadnax had 10 pts while Chappell and SG Austin Raub each had 9. Chappell also had 7 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals.
