The topsy-turvy world that is California Community College basketball in 2003-04 continued Thursday night as 2 teams ranked in the top 7 in the South lost at the Rio Hondo tourney in Whittier.
In the day's first game, Glendale PG Jason Flowers hit an 8-foot runner with 0.6 secs left to give the Vaqueros (4-3) a 74-72 win over #7 Citrus (5-4). Flowers finished with 11 pts and 7 asts, while SF Mike Newton led Glendale with 17 pts including 4 threes. SF Alex Banks had a big game off the bench with 13 pts including 3 threes, plus a pair of blocks and a steal. Ctr Mark Felder had 10 pts and a team-high 8 rebs. Citrus was led by PF Chris Dean, who had 22 pts and 8 rebs. PG Chris Reaves had 7 pts and 9 asts but shot 2/11 on the day. Statistically, the game was remarkably even: both teams shot 29/61 (.490) and each made 7 FTs. Citrus had more assists (23 to 22) and more turnovers (22 to 20). Each team had 8 steals. But the difference was Glendale's 9 threes (to 7 for the Owls) and, of course, Flowers' clutch shot.
