The topsy-turvy world that is California Community College basketball in 2003-04 continued Thursday night as 2 teams ranked in the top 7 in the South lost at the Rio Hondo tourney in Whittier.
#1 West LA (8-2) fell victim to Mt. San Antonio (5-3) in the day's final game. SG Dino Wilburn staked the Mounties to an early 9-0 lead on 3 threes, and Mt. SAC led the rest of the way. West LA closed the gap to 31-28 at the half, but in the second half the Mounties extended their lead. A three by Jason Breland followed by a layup by PF Adrian Fletcher extended the lead to 16 at 51-35 with just under 7 mins left, and Mt. SAC was never less than 10 after that.
Wilburn finished with a game-high 18 pts before suffering an apparent ankle sprain in the game's final minutes. Breland had 14 pts plus 6 asts. Fletcher had a game-high 9 boards. For West LA, which started a rather unconventional lineup of 4 guards and Ctr Dado Kabov before inserting their regulars, PG DeJuan Stevens led the way wtih 11 pts, 7 rebs and 6 asts. Kabov added 10 pts and 7 rebs.
