SD City 77, Sierra 66

SF Caleb Singleton scored all 17 of his points in the second half to lead San Diego City to its third straight win and the championship of the 2013 Neil Edwards Classic Sunday afternoon at Citrus College in Glendora.

Singleton made 5 threes in the second half, one of which started a key 11-0 run in the final four-plus minutes as SD City (5-4) pulled away late from Sierra (2-4). Until then, SD City, which posted wins over Chaffey and Orange Coast College earlier in the weekend, had held just modest leads of no more than 3 points against the Wolverines.

Singeton's 3-pointer made it 63-60 with just over 4 minutes to play. Then SG Mike Scott made a short jumper and then scored on a lay-up following a blocked shot by Ctr Jovan Griffin to make it 67-60. PF Chris Burton scored off an inbounds pass to make it 69-60. Then Scott grabbed a steal around midcourt and scored on a lay-up to make it 71-60 with 2:30 left, and the Knights led easily the rest of the way.

Sierra, which had been ranked #3 in Northern California in the coaches' pre-season poll, lost all three of its games on its tour of Southern California on the weekend. But the Wolverines started out well enough, taking a 25-15 lead midway through the first half.

SD City rallied to tie the score at 29 with about 5 minutes left in the first half, and it was tied at 34 at the break. Sierra started the second half with a 6-0 spurt to lead 40-34 less than two minutes into the second half, but SD City again rallied quickly, tying the score at 47 after a pair of threes by Singleton. The game was played on even terms after than until the 11-0 SD City run.

Singleton led all scorers with his 17 pts, and he added 9 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals. Scott came off the bench for 15 pts and Burton came off the bench for 13 pts, 4 rebs, 3 asts and 4 blocked shots. SG Martin Thomas had 9 pts plus game-highs of 9 asts and 4 steals. Griffin had 5 pts and tied Singleton for game-high with 9 rebs.

For Sierra, PF Cody Wilcox had 14 pts and 7 rebs, and SF Jaquan Dupree came off the bench and also scored 14 pts. SF Matt Scott had 9 pts and a team-high 5 asts.

Thomas was initially named to the all-tournament team and later also named tournament MVP as after Citrus' loss later in the day SD City emerged as the only team to go 3-0 on the weekend. Singleton joined him on the all-tournament team.
