Chaffey 87, Irvine Valley 76

SG Anthony Cammon had 26 pts, including 7 of the 15 threes made by #4 Chaffey (11-2) as the Panthers outlasted an equally hot-shooting Irvine Valley (8-5) squad, 87-76, in the first semifinal of the Roadrunner Round-Up tournament at Rio Hondo.

Cammon went 8-for-11 from the floor, and had 19 of his points in the first half, helping Chaffey withstand IVC’s shooting 56.5% from the floor for the game including 58% in the first half. But Chaffey also forced 34 Laser turnovers, generating 16 steals on the night.

Despite beginning the night by missing its first 7 shots from the field, Chaffey raced out to a 24-15 lead midway through the first half. But then Irvine Valley rallied, going on an 11-0 run that featured one three by SG Jeff Ledbetter and two threes by SF Carlos Pinto to take a 39-33 lead. The IVC advantage grew to as many as 7 points late in the half when a steal & basket by SG Andrew Arnold made it 42-35.

But Cammon, who made 6 of his 7 shots in the first half, drained his 5th three of the night just before halftime to make it 45-41 at the break. And he began the second half in identical fashion, draining another three, this one at the end of the shot clock, to make it 45-44. After a basket by Pinto gave Irvine Valley a 47-44 lead, SF Winston Robinson knocked down a three for Chaffey to tie the game at 47.

The lead went back and forth after that, with the game still tied when Robinson scored on a driving lay-up to break a 67-67 deadlock with just over six minutes remaining. Then PG Lamar Williams scored on a conventional 3-point play to make it 72-67, and the Panthers led the rest of the way.

Still, Irvine Valley stayed close and trailed by just 5 at 77-72 after a three by Ledbetter – his fifth of the night – with just under three minutes left. But Chaffey PF Michael Munoz drew a foul with 2:28 left and went to the line. He made the first free throw to make it 78-72. He missed the second, but ended up getting the rebound, and that eventually led to a three by Williams that made it 81-72.

Irvine Valley got back within 7 at 81-74 after a made jumper by PG Blake Touchard, but that would be as close as the Lasers would get. In the final 1:26, Williams made 7 of 8 free throws and Cammon made another on a technical foul to seal the win for Chaffey.

Cammon was just one of four players to score in double figures for Chaffey. Williams had an excellent game with 15 pts, all in the second half, plus game-highs of 7 assists and 4 steals. SF Chris Confair had 13 pts, including 4 threes, and Robinson added 12 pts and 6 rebs. Ctr Derek Simon gave Chaffey a big lift off the bench with 8 pts and a team-high 8 rebs.

For Irvine Valley, Ledbetter led the way with 19 pts, including the five threes, and 3 steals before fouling out in the final minute on a technical foul. Pinto had a solid game with 14 pts and a team-high 5 asts. PF Brandon Hucks battled foul trouble and managed just 7 pts and 6 rebs before picking up his 5th foul with 5:41 left, though PF Kwame Alexander picked up the slack and just missed a double-double with 9 pts and a game-high 9 rebs.
