Santa Ana 84, Rio Hondo 71

Ctr Ian Parks had a dominant game with 22 pts and 18 rebs, and PF Tyler Averill also had 22 pts and Santa Ana (6-4) led virtually all the way in an 84-71 win over host Rio Hondo (4-8) in the second semifinal of the Roadrunner Round-Up in Whittier.

Parks posted his double-double before halftime, helped by the benching of Rio Hondo PF Jonathan Cutkelvin (for disciplinary reasons). But even when Cutkelvin played in the second half, Parks continued his strong play and Rio Hondo never got the Santa Ana lead out of double digits.

Rio Hondo began the game with a 3-pointer by PG Maurice Cole, but Santa Ana made its first 4 shots from the floor to take a 9-3 lead in the game’s opening minutes. The margin grew to double figures at 13-3 and reached as much as 17 at 28-11 before Rio Hondo rallied to make it a 10-point game at 38-28 late in the first half. But then Parks scored on a putback, giving him 14 points and 10 rebounds at that point, and the Dons held a 42-30 lead at halftime.

Santa Ana pushed its lead to 18 points at 59-41 after a pair of baskets by Averill midway through the second half, before Rio Hondo scored the game’s next 8 points to cut the deficit to 8 points with 9:47 left.

But that would be as close as the Roadrunners would get. Pair of free throws by Parks and Averill made it 63-49. A basket by Rio Hondo Ctr Dusty Simcox momentarily stopped the momentum, but then Santa Ana got a 3-pointer from Averill and a conventional 3-point play from PG Nehemiah Weicks to again make it an 18-point game at 69-51. Rio Hondo never got any closer than the final score, which came after a bank-shot three by SG Quincy Thrower in the game’s final seconds.

Parks led the way for the Dons with his 22 pts and 18 rebs. But Averill also had a strong game with 22 pts, 6 rebs and 3 asts. PG Isiah Amaguna was solid with 9 pts, 7 rebs and 6 asts. SG Josh Poitevin, PF B<>Marcus McAdams and Weicks each had 8 pts; Weicks added 6 asts and 5 rebs.

For Rio Hondo, SF Darryl Alexander led the way with a game-high 23 pts. Cole finished with 18 pts, 5 rebs and 4 asts, with 16 of his points coming in the first half. PF Dusty Simcox just missed a double-double with 10 pts and 9 rebs.
