SG Sydney Hall hit the game-winning shot, a 3-pointer with one second left on the clock to lift #1 San Bernardino Valley (9-1) to a thrilling 71-70 victory over Foothill Conference #12 Antelope Valley (8-5) in the 5th place game at the 40th annual Riverside Holiday Tournament December 12th.
AVC seemingly had the game under control, thanks largely to PG Rod Singleton. The sophomore guard had hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 2:03 left, driven for the go-ahead lay-up with 1:15 remaining, and stolen a pass in the final minute that led to a free throw by SG Nick Bennett that made it 70-68 with 36.2 seconds left.
Then with 9.6 seconds left, Singleton went to the foul line for two shots that would have all but sealed the win. But he missed them both, leaving AVC with a tenuous 2-point lead.
Without a timeout, SBVC got the ball upcourt quickly and inside to PF Curtis Wilkinson. As the clock ticked down, Wilkinson passed the ball out to Hall, who was spotted up beyond the right elbow. The 6-2 sophomore guard caught the pass and drained the 3-pointer to give SBVC the 71-70 win. One second remained on the clock, but AVC was out of timeouts, and Singleton's desperation half-court shot was not close as time ran out.
All that snatched the win away from AVC, which had persevered to somehow take the lead in the game's late stages. Singleton's 3-pointer tied the score at 67 with 2:03 left, and his lay-up gave the Marauders a 69-68 lead with 1:15 remaining. Then the Bennett free throw made it 70-68.
That AVC was in position to take the lead was somewhat amazing after a first half in which SBVC seemed to have the upper hand. The Wolverines built a 28-16 lead midway through the half, but AVC got within 6 points at the break, largely because the Marauders went 16-for-16 from the free throw line in the first half.
SBVC briefly pushed the lead back to 10 points at 58-48 in the second half, but AVC rallied to tie the score at 53 after a driving lay-up by SF Donald Williams with 10:40 left. SBVC went back in front and maintained a slim lead before Singeton's game-tying 3-pointer with 2:03 left.
PG Nate Roth led SBVC with 14 pts, while Hall and Wilkinson each had 10 pts. SF Tre Brewer had 9 pts, PF Aaron Edwards had 8 pts and 9 rebs and Ctr Maurice McGee also had 8 pts.
Singleton finished with 11 pts for AVC, as did PF Matt Stern. Williams came off the bench for 12 pts, and SG Darrin Johnson came off the bench for a game-high 16 pts, all in the second half, when he made 6 of 6 shots from the floor, including 4 threes.
