PG Joe Faumuina had 19 pts, one of five scorers in double figures, as Las Positas (7-5) overcame a rough start to beat Lassen (8-6) in the first round of the Chabot Holiday Tournament Friday in Hayward.
Faumuina had 16 of his points in the second half as the Hawks rallied for the win en route to eventually winning the tournament championship. Las Positas is coached by Tony Costello, the longtime coach at Chabot.
Lassen began the game on an 11-0 run, and held a 12-point edge at 30-18 midway through the first half. But Las Positas rallied to cut the margin to a single point late in the half before Lassen pushed it back to 4 points at the break.
In the second half, Las Positas took its first lead of the game on a basket by Faumuina on a dish from SG Mike Gammage that made it 55-54 with just over 10 minutes left in the game. Lassen went back and front and held a 61-60 lead after a short jumper by SG Chris Carlson with just over 7 minutes remaining, but then Las Positas got a pair of free throws and a basket by PFBrandon Tatum to go back in front. It was still a 3-point game at 68-65 when Faumuina drained a three with just under 4 minutes left. The lead grew to 8 at 75-67 on a putback basket by SF Marques Smith, and a pair of free throws by SG Jeff Ford made it 77-67 with 1:01 left and clinched the win for Chabot.
In addition to Faumuina, double-figures for Las Positas were Ctr Dominic Roberson (14 pts, 7 rebs, 4 blocks), Smith (13 pts) and Tatum (13 pts, 5 blocks). Ctr Djuan Estis posted a double-double with 11 pts and 10 rebs.
For Lassen, SF Jordan Stokes led the way with 23 pts and 6 rebs. Chris Carlson had 19 pts, including 16 in the first half to spur the Cougars strong start. PF Darius Steward had 16 pts. PG Brandon Thompson had just 2 pts but died out a game-high 7 asts and grabbed 3 steals.
