SG Alex Mallari scored a game-high 24 pts and SF Derieck Mosbey made three 3-pointers in overtime as host #5 Chabot edged #12 Redwoods, 81-76, in overtime in the first round of the Chabot Holiday Tournament Friday night in Hayward.
In easily the most entertaining game of the day, Chabot survived a rough start, as well as an impossible, fadeaway 3-pointer at the regulation buzzer by Redwoods’ SG Tom Higgins that sent the game into overtime.
But in the extra session, Mosbey’s third 3-pointer of overtime gave Chabot a 77-74 lead with 48 seconds left. PF Dave Norton made a pair of free throws for Redwoods to make it a 1-point game at 77-76 with 38.4 seconds left, but the Corsairs were forced to foul after that and Mallari made a pair of free throws for Chabot with 30.6 seconds left. After a Redwoods miss, Mallari got the rebound, was fouled and made two more free throws with 14.4 seconds left to clinch the win for Chabot.
All that capped a wild game that saw Redwoods jump out to an 18-6 lead, only to see Chabot go on a 14-3 run to cut the margin to a point at 21-20 midway through the first half. The Gladiators eventually tied the game at 27 on a putback basket by Mosbey and took a 31-27 lead late in the half before a late basket by PG Darren Nye for Redwoods made it 31-29 at the break.
In the second half, Mosbey showed his passing prowess, assisting on the first three Chabot baskets of the half to push the Gladiatiors to a 38-29 lead. But Redwoods rallied, taking a 46-45 lead on a three by SG Joe Smith with just under 12 minutes remaining. The lead went back and forth for the next few minutes before Redwoods pushed out to a 6-point lead at 59-53 with 6:40 left.
But Chabot rallied, helped by a technical foul assessed against the Redwoods coach (though a fan behind the bench was the one who said the magic words) and tied the game at 61 with 4:10 left. Redwoods went back in front, 65-61, on a pair of free throws and a basket by Norton. But Chabot rallied, taking a 67-65 lead on a three by Mosbey with 50.5 seconds left. A free throw by PG Kelvin Potts made it 68-65 with 25.4 seconds left, but his miss on the first of two free throws had left the door open ever so slightly for Redwoods, allowing Higgins’ 3-pointer with 4.2 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
For Chabot, Mallari had a game-high 24 pts and 5 rebs. Mosbey had 16 pts, including the 4 late threes, and 5 asts. Potts had a strong game as well with 17 pts (4 threes), 6 asts and 3 steals. Ctr Paki Brown had 8 pts and game-highs of 12 rebs and 4 blocked shots.
For Redwoods, Higgins had 16 pts, including 4 threes, and Norton had 16 pts on 5-of-5 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line. Nye had 12 pts and 5 asts, while Smith and Ctr Tim Pratt each had 11 pts.
