Cabrillo (7-6) played a near-flawless first half, got 34 pts from PF Jared Wood and routed Compton (3-12) in a foul-filled game in the first round of the Chabot Holiday Tournament Friday night.
The Seahawks shot 52% from the floor with 11 threes in the first half, pushed the margin to 30 points before halftime, and was in control throughout.
But Compton didnt go down without a fight, or at least a lot of fouls. The Tartars accumulated a total of 43 fouls, including 4 technicals and an intentional foul, and had six players foul out. Most of that came in the second half, which took well over an hour to play, in which Cabrillo went to the free throw line a staggering 51 times.
Compton cut the margin to 18 points at 70-52 with just under 8 minutes left in the game. But then SF Andrew Haley fouled out, and Cabrillo quickly pushed the lead back into the 20s.
From that point on, every time Cabrillo got the ball, Compton seemed to foul if not intentionally at least recklessly. Four of the Tartars to foul out were non-starters, including SG Cordell Coleman, who had no points, no shot attempts and one rebound before fouling out with 39.2 seconds left. After SG Brian Turner committed Comptons 43rd and final foul of the night, his fifth, the officials ran the final 14.3 seconds off the clock rather than risk an incident.
Wood scored his 34 pts on 8 of 13 from the floor, and also benefited from the Compton foul fest as he made 14 of 20 free throws on the night. SG Denver Mack had 16 pts, SF Steve Williams had 14, while Ctr Chris Sharp and SF Travess Armenta each had 11.
For Compton, PG Aquell Smith led the way with 22 pts. PG Kevin Buggs was held out of the first half for disciplinary reasons but managed 11 pts and 4 asts in the second half before fouling out with 4:30 left. Haley, the first of the six Tartars to foul out, had 10 pts, 5 rebs and 3 asts.
