SG Kevin Lawson had 18 pts and SF A.J. Mathis had 12 as Victor Valley won its first-round game over Moorpark, 77-60, in the 2011 Vaquero Classic at Glendale College.
Victor Valley (2-5) used three runs to take a lead, take control of the game and put it away. Overall, the Rams shot 52.6% from the floor (and also 52.6% from the line) while grabbing 18 steals from the Raiders.
Moorpark (3-9) trailed by just a single point at 18-17 midway through the first half when Victor Valley went on its first run, a 11-0 spurt that pushed the lead to 12 points at 29-17. 3-ponters by Ctr Jeff Barnes and SG Sammy Hicks made it 27-17, and Barnes finished the run after a pass from PG Josiah Jackson.
Victor Valley led, 32-23, at the half, but started the second half with a 9-0 run to push the lead to 18 at 41-23 less than two minutes into the second half. A 3-pointer by Mathis, a steal & lay-up by PG Chris Fowler and a pair of baskets by PF Justin Malan comprised this spurt.
Moorpark cut the lead to 10 at 52-42 after a 3-pointer by PG Greg Parker with 12:15 left in the second half.
Then came Victor Valley's third run, a 12-2 spurt that pushed the margin to 20 points at 64-44 and settled the game's outcome. A 3-pointer by SF Tanner Oldfield, a free throw by Lawson and a basket by Ctr Ernest VonOrsdell made it 56-42 and stopped Moorpark's momentum. Lawson made two free throws with 9:38 left to restore VVC's 18-point lead at 62-44, and then he scored on a lay-up after a steal to make it 64-44.
Lawson finished with 18 pts, 3 asts and 5 steals, while Mathis had 12 pts, 6 rebs, 3 asts and 4 steals. No other Ram scored in double figures, but eight other Rams had at least one field goal. Barnes had 8 pts, 6 asts, 4 rebs and 3 steals. And the 6-foot-10 VanOrsdell had 6 pts, 7 rebs and 4 blocked shots.
For Moorpark, PF Coltrane Powdrill led the way with 19 pts on 8-for-13 from the floor, and he also had 3 steals. SG Jamal McClerkin had 17 pts, including 4 threes, and 8 rebs. Parker came off the bench for 9 pts and 5 asts.
With the win, Victor Valley improves to 2-5 and will take on Glendale in the semifinals on Friday. Moorpark falls to 3-9 and will play Rio Hondo in the consolation bracket on Friday.
