Glendale 82, Cuyamaca 62

Ctr Gor Plavchyan scored 20 pts and added 12 rebs and 3 blocked shots to lead Glendale to an 82-62 win over Cuyamaca Friday evening in a championship semifinal of the 2012 Vaquero Classic at Verdugo Gym.

Plavchyan keyed a 12-0 spurt that became a 22-2 run to end the first half that put the host Vaqueros (5-5) in control of the game. Glendale led, 38-24, at the break and led by at least 14 points throughout the second half.

Cuyamaca (3-8) led, 18-12, early on before the run, which started with 3 straight baskets by the 6-7 Plavchyan. Then SG Emerson Castaneda and Plavchyan hit 3-pointers to make it 24-18.

Cuyamaca got two free throws from PG Harry Brazelton to break the 12-0 run, but that hardly slowed Glendale down. SF Isaiah Howard hit a 3-pointer and made two free throws to make it 29-20, and PF Mike Johnson added a free throw with 2:26 left in the first half to make it 30-20. SG Mark Hicks scored on a driving lay-up to make it 32-20, and PG Dion Nelson scored after a steal by Howard to finish the run and make it 34-20.

Glendale pushed the lead to 20 points on a 3-pointer by Castaneda. The lead reached as many as 27 points after a driving lay-up by Johnson made it 71-44 with 7:07 left. The closest Cuyamaca got after that was 16 points at 73-57, but the Coyotes never threatened to catch the Vaqueros.

Plavcyhan, a recent standout with Grant HS of Van Nuys and the LA Rockfish travel team, had game-highs with his 20 pts, 12 rebs and 3 blocked shots. Johnson had 13 pts and Howard came off the bench for 13 pts, 6 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals. Castaneda had 12 pts, all on 3-pointers.

For Cuyamaca, SF Garrett Larch-Miller had 19 pts and added 6 rebs and 3 steals. Brazelton had 11 pts but battled foul trouble, fouling out with just over 4 minutes to go. SF Keko Moore came off the bench for 10 pts, a team-high 7 rebs, 2 asts and 2 steals. box score
