#6 Yuba (12-2) had five scorers in double figures and blocked 13 shots, and SF Tristan Wilson had 27 pts and 13 rebs to capture tournament MVP honors and lead the 49ers to a 92-82 win over #8 Los Medanos (11-5) in the championship game of the Kris Kringle Classic tournament at Santa Rosa Junior College.
Wilson, taking up some of the slack for injured SF Royal Edwards (hip), scored 21 of his points after halftime and had two of the blocks for Yuba. But PF Sean Harris (5 blocks), Ctr Kyle Rische (4 blocks) and 7-1 Ctr Xavier Crawford (2 blocks) also had an impact as the Yuba defense held Los Medanos to just 34% shooting for the game.
Yuba began the game well, taking an 18-10 lead with 11:34 left, only to see Los Medanos rally and tie the game at 21 less than 3 minutes later and go ahead on an alley-oop dunk moments later by Ctr Marcus Balinton. The lead went back and forth the rest of the half, with Ctr Nate McDaniel breaking a 39-39 tie with a steal and jumper at the buzzer at the end of the first half to put Los Medanos ahead, 41-39, at the break.
When the second half began, however, Yuba went on a 14-3 run to take command of the game. The 49ers immediately went into the lead on a pair of baskets by Wilson. After a baseline jumper by SG Phillip LeDoux pulled LMC even at 43, Wilson drained a three to put Yuba back in front, 46-43 and the 49ers led the rest of the way. A lay-up by SG Casey Cutts pushed the lead to 48-43 and a putback slam by Rische made it 50-43. After a free throw by Los Medanos SF Ben Guillory, Harris drained a three to make it 53-44 Yuba.
The 49ers put the game away midway through the half after a teardrop basket by PG Mayse Walker made it a 10-point game at 72-62 with 8:56 left. Then Wilson scored on a putback of his own miss to make it 74-62. A Wilson free throw made it 75-62 with 6:36 left, and another teardrop by Walker, this one off the glass, pushed the margin to 15 at 77-62 with just under 6 minutes left, and Yuba had the win.
The multi-talented Harris had a Pippen-like game with 12 pts, 6 rebs, 5 blocks, 3 asts and 3 steals for Yuba. Cutts also had 12 pts. And Rische had a huge impact with 11 pts, a game-high 15 rebs and 4 blocks. PG Courtney Tyler, who saw considerable action both in the first quarter in place of Walker (who got into early foul trouble) and in the second half as an extra guard against the Los Medanos press, had a strong effort with 10 pts, 7 rebs and 3 asts.
Los Medanos was led by LeDoux, who had 18 pts, and Balinton, who had a double-double with 15 pts and 10 rebs. PG Stephen Andrews had a solid game with 12 pts, 5 rebs, 5 asts and 5 steals. Guillory managed 11 pts, 7 rebs, 3 blocks and 2 steals though he shot just 4-for-20. And while Los Medanos forced 16 Yuba turnovers in the first half, Yuba seemed to adjust to the pressure in the second half.
Wilson, the tournament MVP, was joined on the all-tournament team by Rische (Yuba), Andrews (LMC) and LeDoux (LMC).
