Pierce College (4-5) got 31 pts from SG Sylvester Allison and shot 56.5% from the field in their upset win over visiting Bakersfield (6-5) December 16th. Allison hit 11 of 20 shots, including 6 threes, to lead all scorers.
At the end of a see-saw first half, Bakersfield took their biggest lead of the night when SG Mikail Malik's three at the buzzer gave the Renegades a 43-37 lead at intermission. But Bakersfield shot only 28% from the field in the second half, and watched Pierce take a 13-point lead at 67-54 with 6:41 left. Bakersfield rallied to close the gap to 3 at 71-68 in the final minute, at which point both SG Tyler Monk and PF Peter Rajniak took potential game-tying 3-point shots, but each missed. Pierce's PG Paul Simon and SF Mustafa Asghari each drained a pair of FTs in the final 30 seconds to secure the win.
In addition to Allison, top performers for Pierce included Asghari (15 pts on 6/8 FGs, 4 asts) from off the bench and Ctr Brandon Duplessie (9 pts, 7 rebs, 4 blocks).
Bakersfield was led by SF Ocie Wyatt (20 pts on 8/13 FGs, 5 rebs) and Ctr Arnold Walton (11 pts, 8 rebs, 4 steals). Malik had 12 pts and Monk added 10 in reserve roles. Backup PG Darryl Carter had a strong game with 7 pts, 3 reb, 2 asts, 1 blk and 1 stl.
