SF Tyler Tiedeman scored 22 pts and dished out 7 asts to lead a balanced attack as host Santa Rosa (6-3) upset 9th-ranked (in the North) Los Medanos (7-4) in the finale of Day 2 of the Kris Kringle Classic at SRJC. The win gives the Bear Cubs a berth in the championship game against 5th-ranked West Valley, who toppled preseason #1-ranked Yuba in the other semifinal.
It was a wide-open, offensive-oriented afternoon in all the games, each of which featured at least 17 three-pointers. And each team except Mendocino scored at least 84 points.
Santa Rosa led virtually wire-to-wire in their win. Both teams began with a lot of scoring; SRJC led 23-18 after 8 minutes. But the Bear Cubs stayed hot, hitting 51% of their shots including 11 threes in topping the century mark. LMC rallied late but was never able to cut into SRJC's lead.
Ctr Eryk Thomas had a strong game with 19 pts and 7 rebs, while PF Nic Pederson had a double-double with 12 pts and a game-high 13 boards. PG Anthony Mlachnik had 13 (3 threes), SG Zach Bachmeier had 11, and the Bear Cubs got a big boost from the backcourt reserves: PG Weleh Dennis had 11 pts and 4 asts, while SG Amos Carter had 9 pts.
LMC lost despite a remarkable performance from their Baton Rouge Backcourt. PG Phillip Washington had an almost-unbelievable statistical game: 14 pts on 6/8 shooting, 12 asts, 9 rebs, 3 steals and no turnovers. Derrick Edmonds had a game-high 28 pts including 7 threes.
